After our night of clubbing at The Mist, the MUST crew woke the next morning bright and early, with a nice little hangover, so we could be ready for the bus when it came at 8am. At around 11am, we found out that it's running on African Time – you'd think we would have learned to give up on “Muzungu Time” by now. I tried explaining to Ivan that we were always ready when we were told to be, just in case it's the one time things are actually running on time here. Without hesitation he responded, “that time with never come, my friend.” And so far, he's completely right. Since we had no food left and didn't have breakfast, Leandra and I fried up the rest of the beaver tail dough for lunch so we ... read more

So, first off, I apologize for posting four blogs in a row, but power and internet have been minimal lately. First no power for several days, which is why the next two blogs are going to be short and might sound a little rushed – I quickly wrote them before my computer died. And then I didn't have a strong enough internet connection to post the blogs until now. The next week at Kihefo involved some work at the clinic and group work, as per usual, but we also did some home visits and nutritional assessments of the community. As well, our team from MUST went back to Lake Bunyonyi, again, to visit the traditional healer. One morning, 16 of us, which included some of our group members and hospital staff, crammed into the back of ... read more

So just a disclaimer, while this is probably the most interesting blog post I've written, it's also pretty long. So make some tea, grab a sandwich and enjoy! Alright, one Friday afternoon, Leandra and I, and two of the American medicine students, Adriene and Marty, all hopped in a van to head to Kisoro for the weekend to climb a volcano and conquer nature! Seems simple enough, right? Well, keep reading. The two hour drive to Kisoro boasts to be one of the most beautiful in Uganda, as it allows us to travel alongside Lake Bunyonyi and through the hilly and mountainous countryside. The volcano we were planning on hiking, Muhavura, is the tallest in the mountain range, and stands along the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo. On the drive we passed a section ... read more

Rugazi week 3 Day 27- Baby Gena’s birthday (in the kind words of the Ugandan students)!!!! In the morning I went to the general ward with Bernard and Gena. In the afternoon Ben, Gena and I went to Saint Michael’s High school to arrange a presentation to their students towards hand hygiene and latrine cleanliness. The meeting was successful and the school agreed to having a presentation and after that event Rugazi group B went to meet with the local Village Health Team (VHT) about collaborating in the a workshop towards latrine cleanliness that is set for the coming up Tuesday. Throughout the whole afternoon I was assigned to distracting Gena while the others prepped for her surprise party. Around 6 or 7 we all surprised Gena for her birthday and sang a very long and ... read more

24 June: Queen Elizabeth National Park Our day started off early as we decided to do the trekking for the chimpanzees in Kailnzu forest. Once we arrived to find our guides for the trek, we had to split in two groups. Our group was Michael, Lionus, Samantha, Charlotte, Sophie, Dave, Tamara, Nichole, and myself. We started a long hike downwards through the forest. It was slippery along he way but an enjoyable hike. After about an hour and a half we were able to spot the chimpanzees. They were up in the trees right above us, about four or five of them. Samantha got some great photos of them and I had a few. Was amazing to see. We then did a nice hike out of the forest where we emerged from the edge of the ... read more

This post covers our second week at Kihefo, which was a lot more interesting than the first week, as we finally were able to get to the rural communities and make some progress on our group project. I started the week off spending some time with Alphonse and learning more about the rabbit-breeding project. In the morning, Alphonse came to Kihefo, picked me up on his boda boda and off we went to visit the farms of people who either had already started breeding rabbits or were just getting prepared to do so. I need to stop for a moment. I was so pumped to finally ride a boda boda here, aka a motorcycle! It had been years since I was on a bike, and I so badly wanted to try cruising around on one in ... read more

This is going to be nice and short, to balance out the last few longer ones! (. . . also the power is out and my battery is going to die.) It's finally time for Leandra and I to have our first free weekend since leaving home, so we decided to take off to beautiful Lake Bunyonyi! Lake Bunyonyi is a short distance away from Kabale and is known for its beauty and having many small islands scattered within the lake (29, I believe). We checked into our oh-so-simple $10 per night room – simple as in it only had beds, and about half a light bulb – and decided to have some lunch and a beer on the patio over looking the lake. My friends know how much I can't resist a chance to have ... read more

Just a quick note – so there has been a glitch on the TravelBlog website, and anyone who has tried subscribing to the blog hasn't been added to the email list. Until it gets fixed, just message me your email on Facebook or private message me on here so I can manually add the addresses to the list. Sorry about that! Now that our orientation/class was finally finished it was time for us to head out into rural Uganda to work in the small communities and the local health clinic/hospital. Snoop Dogg told us to be at the school by 7am sharp and although we had serious doubts that we would leave anytime close to this, we were on time just in case. And, as we expected, somewhere around 10:30am our bus, packed to the roof ... read more

Day 18- Saturday June 7th-Breakfast we had homemade somosas (yummy!!). Early in the morning we had a fairly bad rain/hail storm and then for the rest of the day it was sunny out. Lounged around the health centre and played volleyball with a homemade ball (made out of plastic bags and yarn) and made new friends. Had a group meeting in the evening about our community project. It was a fairly quiet day. Day 19- had chapattis for breakfast and chicken for lunch!!!! Another quiet day and a late group meeting. Day 20- Mike and I changed up our "ward rounds" and went to General ward for the week. Mariam a Ugandan student nurse also joined us. This day was quite jumbled since the clinical officers were following Mike, so I kind of bounced between pediatrics ... read more
