Kilimanjaro: The Roof of Africa. - Altitude at Uhuru Peak - 19341 feet.

I've been mesmerized by Kilimanjaro ever since i watched the IMAX movie on Kilimanjaro. After many years, I finally got to stand on top this month!

I had a lot of people ask me this: (explanation below).
Kilimanjaro is named "world's highest freestanding mountain" because it rises 15,100 feet from its base, its the most difference from base to peak of any mountain...more than Everest. (Everest's base is already pretty high at 18,360 feet).

The base of kilimanjaro is around 4000 feet and rises to 19,341 feet at the summit (difference of ~ 15,100), while Everest's basse is at 18360 feet and rises to 29,035 feet (for a difference of ~10,675). Hence Kilimanjaro is highest free-standing mountain in the world. (Not the highest mountain, just the highest free-standing).

We did the 6-day route up the Machame Route.

Day 1: Machame Camp at ~10,000feet
Day 2: Shira Camp at ~12500 feet
Day 3: Barranco Camp at ~13000 feet
Day 4: Barafu Camp at ~ 15,531 feet
Day 5: Uhuru Peak (Summit) ~19341 feet
and then down to Mweka at ~10,000 feet
Day 6: Back down to Moshi at Mweka Gate at ~ 6000 feet
