We loved this little man! How inconspicuous.. Our final country on our African adventure. We crossed the border into South Africa from Botswana on yet another long driving day. Had to limit our fluid intake today as toilet stops would be limited to major towns due to the risk of truck-jacking! We were happy to hold on! Drove through some spectacular scenery on our way to Blyde Gorge. Almost remeniscent of driving through Hammersley Range in Western Australia. Set up our tents for the very last time at a camp ground on Blyde Gorge. We took a lovely walk to see the Gorge at sunset with beautiful colours standing out in the last light of the day. Pity we forgot to take the camera...have that one down in memory only now!
The next day was spent calling in at various viewpoints to see the enormous Blyde Gorge and stock up on wood carvings from the many vendors along the way. We arrived at our next overnight stay on the edge of Kruger National Park late in the afternoon. We were delighted that what was to be two nights spent in a basic canvas hut (a treat for the last two nights of the trip) was upgraded to
Amazing Blyde Gorge
We just weren't expecting to see something so rugged and beautiful on our trip...such a pleasant surprise! two nights spent in a luxury private canvas hut complete with jacuzzi on the front deck and amazing outdoor bamboo showers....and air-con!
We went on a night drive that night...a little disappointing as our guide had got the times wrong and we ended up departing late and missing the sunset (and the beers!). We saw very little game but did manage to see a spotted janet boucing through the trees at night (saw his eyes anyway!).
We had a 6am start for our game drive the next day through Kruger. Today was much more sucessful and we managed to see several white rhino, zebra, buffalo and elephants along with the usual impala as well as cute little water bucks and steen bocks. One elephant came a little too close to the truck for Kirst's comfort. Met a cute little owl called a Soc Owl at our lunch-stop and saw many other spectacular birds on the trip back to camp. Our last evening in the wilderness was spent sipping wine and eating cheese in our jacuzzi followed by dinner and a late night around the campfire with our safari family. We were both sad to be finishing the trip
and getting excited about heading home to Australia to see family and friends.
Spent one night in Johanessburg before flying out to Singapore. The city seemed to live up to its reputation with an abundance of razor wire and securely compounded suburbs. Our truck almost had other plans as it broke down several times on the way in....overheating: a problem we were only too familiar with! It wasn't until the driver eventually realised that one of the inside tyres was shredded that the problem was solved. Said some sad goodbyes to friends we had made along the way and ordered take away delivery to our hostel for our last night. Beers in the bar (again!) and several games of pool later we made it to bed to rest ready for our departure from Africa.
Many thanks to the friends we made along the way and happy and safe travels to all of you who are continuing your around the world adventures. Hoping to catch you again some time...somewhere!
