We set off for Kalk Bay today, a little apprehensive as to what our accommodation would be like after yesterdays delight. We needn’t have worried as the apartment we are renting, off of Marie and Dave, is superb. We are so close to the sea, with an amazing view. You can hear the sea crashing against the rocks - it is an absolute delight. We spent the afternoon investigating Kalk Bay and found our way to the Brass Bell, a pub restaurant right on the sea front. This had been recommended to us by various South Africans we have met on our travels and also by one of the service providers I deal with at work. If you take a window seat in the Brass Bell it is quite a shock, the first time, when the ... read more

Two more weeks have past and now just over a week until im off to Thailand. Heres whats been going on... Volunteering Im loving working at the school and have become attached to many of the kids. I'm not really supposed to have favorites but I cant really help myself! In my classroom there are eight kids. Two of them, Candy and Leo have Down Syndrome and they are SO CUTE. Candy has a freckle on her hand and just stares at it all day, then looks at her other hand which doesn't have one and goes back and forth. I will have to bring my own computer next time...or...a flash drive. I prefer not to do the first, because it may be taken from me on the street (yes, this happens quite frequently to people, but I'll just try to minimize my risk). But anyways, I'm having a great time. I've been hanging out a lot with my roommates. We've had the rest of our orientation week with a free day on Thursday. We decided to all go to the beach. Well...little did we know that the Muizenberg beach (on the Indian ocean on the other side of the city) would be really ... read more

Todays plan...Robben Island, the prison encampment where Nelson Mandela was an inmate; Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. What actually happened....... None of the above!!!!! Its raining.......again.......lots........! And its misty, so off we trotted in our faithful chariot Cara Corsa! First stop, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, where we had just missed the ferry for Robben Island so settled into Harries Pancakes for late breakfast/early elevenses. Sweet apple & cinnamon pancakes for Hannah, Malva Pudding for Lizzie (a bit like hot syrup sponge) and a glass of still mineral water for Pam!! Yum!!! Once finished, we headed down to the jetty, and spoke to the ticket sales person only to be informed that the weather conditions were so bad that the tour wasn't running! You don't hear the Gosport ferry giving up like that...such wimps! Honestly!!! ... read more
