Arrived in Cape town all safe and sound. this is for all parents (mothers especially), relatives and friends to keep a track of their "little love ones" as we travel overland through the 'dark continent'. We arrived to a rainy Cape town and have spent most of our time wandering around Westernised shopping malls in search of vital supplies. We are planning to set off along the garden route the day after tomorrow for a couple of days and then back to Cape town to pick up Mark before setting off into the 'interior'. As we have more interesting things to report back we will up date as often as possible. feel free to post entries to tell us how much you all miss us, and before you remind us, we will be careful!!! Love to ... read more

The title is meant to be a bit cheeky, it's actually more like two separate phrases: WE CAN STAY!!! We just found out yesterday that our visas have been approved!!! This is very exciting news and has been a monumental effort on the part of A LOT of people! Thank you to all of our friends and colleagues who wrote us letters, to our mom's for gathering, faxing, and sending official documents, and to our lawyer for standing in line at the Department of Home Affairs from midnight until 5pm too many days to mention. Thank you also to everyone who has provided us with such unwavering support. We are really happy to be here and are very thankful that the process of becoming temporary residents allowing us to work legally is finally accomplished! Our visas ... read more

Today Dori and I went on a Township Tour. From what I understand a township is an area of black or coloured people only. There is a difference between "black" and "coloured" We spent the first hour learning about the history of the Cape, Apartheid and post Apartheid. The first township we visited was for black folk. These townships were established at times of Apartheid to segregate the people from the white. Attached are photos of the places we visited. The people who live in the townships have started up their own businesses within the township - often it is in a metal storage container. They can sell anything and everything or provide services out of these small areas. The homes are very small - always 2 rooms and the walls are adjoining other homes. The ... read more

We spent the day today touring the cape - we went right around the whole tip - we stood on the very tip of Africa - saw the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The Table Mountain is very old - they have dated it back 300 million years and believe me the rock looks that old - WineRocks would have a hay day!!! It was very rainy so not great pictures but here are a few. I was not expecting the wild life - but we saw seals, baboons (check these out they are too funny!!! Honest to God!) and last but not least penguins (these are only found in South Africa).... read more

From here it seems they are pretty normal, although normal seems pretty crazy! Coming from the political reality in which we are currently living, I honestly believe that the current US democratic rat race is anything but abnormal. Let me tell what should not be normal: two countries away from us in Kenya (where I used to live), two months ago we had a near-out literal civil war because the incumbent wouldn't concede his seat. And, again, just one country away (Zimbabwe) we currently have close to a civil war because again the 27-year! incumbent (Mugabe) will not concede to obvious defeat. In fact, he won't even allow the results of the most recent election to be released because it's quite obvious that he is not the winner. The awesome part of it all is the ... read more

Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! Thank you so much for the response to the last travelblog. We are so appreciative of the incredible outpouring of support and love that everyone sent in both comments and emails to us. It has meant so much to both of us! Whether or not you personally sent us a message, it felt like the support of everyone who read it traveled along with the words of those who did write. It made me feel really connected with home. Please keep the messages, comments, and connections coming! We continue to LOVE LOVE LOVE to even just hear how daily life is for you. . . Just as my mom said you would all like to hear about ours. Everyone asked, "How long will you be?" We replied, "We're going to give it two years." "Why two years?" was many a response, and we truly had it all thought out. Months 1 - 6 = Exciting times where everything is new and fresh and awesome and such an adventure. Months 7 - 12 = Not so new anymore, maybe still exciting, but now we've really begun to realize the lack of our community. Months 13 - 24 = Building of the new community. And, honestly we can't say that we've actually given a place a fair shot until we've developed a community because how on Earth can any place be cool when it's trying to compete with the community we had in California?!?! It can't. Our community back home was so amazing; I realized it ... read more

As the T-birds and the Pink Ladies melodically sang, " Summer days driftin' away, to uh-oh those summer nights...Tell me more, tell me more, did you get very far?....Tell me more, tell me more, like, does he have a car?" So to continue reporting on our adventures, it's still summer, we did get far, and no, we don't have a car. Days have been flying by so quick that sometimes we have to stop and remind ourselves that, yes, WE'RE IN AFRICA!! WIA BABY, WIA!!! The months of late January and February flew by with activity and new ideas. In this short time that we have together, I will bring you on a "post-it" adventure of South Africa's current affairs, our trips to new places, and an update in our lives. To start off, I will ... read more

Hey there family and friends- I am just publishing this short editorial to let you knowt that we are both doing just fine. I know that it's been a little while since we last published our tales of adventure and educational growth, but we molded a daily and weekely routine that we consume with an open heart and mind I have a log entry that I will publish in the next few days, after I get the chance to edit it, and add the bells and whistles. St. Valentine's Day is approaching quickly, and you thought that it was just a 'Hallmark Holiday' there in the states? No it's not a geoisolated holiday; it's widely celebrated here too. The newspapers, billboards, and television commercials are littered with ways to spend money on people for the Valentines ... read more
