When you come to Africa and go on safari, everyone is supposed to want to see the Big Five, this is the elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. Not always easy apparently, but we did it today! Another early start, and very cold, and again we set out to look for the rhino! Headed to the north east of the park where rumour had it there were rhino to be found. Up till this point, the game drives appeared to be randomly driving the tracks that criss cross the park, accidentally coming upon animals, or going where others had sighted something. Today we saw the tracking skills of our ranger/driver and our tracker. They first saw rhino tracks headed to an area we were not allowed to enter. (Thornybush is a private game reserve, one of ... read more

We had a rude awakening this morning with a 5am wake up call. Game drive started at 5.30am after coffee and biscuits on the main deck. Game drives are early morning and late afternoon because that is when the animals are most active. Back into the jeep, just daylight and pretty cold. We didn't have to go too far before we saw hyenas, and the two lions we had seen yesterday (don't know how, but the driver seems to be able to identify the animals individually). And an amazing African sunrise. Then a couple more elephants, but then we drove around for quite some time, hoping to spot a rhino. No luck, seemed a bit like driving aimlessly around waiting for animals to appear (and sometimes they did), but the driver had a plan, and took ... read more

Apparently "Cape Town is crying, because we are leaving"! This just means that it was raining and cold as we headed to Cape Town Airport for our flight to Eastgate Airport near Hoedspruit, the closest to Thornybush Game Reserve, our home for the next three nights. (It does have it's own airstrip, but only for tiny planes.) We appeared to land in the middle of nowhere in the African bush, and 36° was a little warmer than Cape Town. Three mini buses ferried our group (of 26) to the Thornybush Game Lodge, with a giraffe and elephants spotted on the way. Wow, and we hadn't even been on a game drive yet. We were met in the outdoor reception area with cold towels, and cold drinks. Very nice! Then lunch, and a briefing of what to ... read more

Well Saturday morning up 3.45a.m., bus 4.45a.m. to airport, Cape Town to JoBurg again, then bus for 6hrs to a township about an hour away from Thornybush where we were transferred to small mini buses and transported to the Thornybush Game Reserve main gate where we were met by our guide and spotter for a game drive 4.00p.m. Whoooo! what a day! Brad our guide/driver is brilliant as is Orlando the spotter and tracker....alll I ever wanted to achieve whilst in Africa was to see a leopard, bucket list....ticked! It was amazing the leopard had killed an impala and dragged the kill up a tree and we were feet away watching it feast on the impala. The excitement was high, even Brad was so, so excited, he hadn't seen this before having been a guide in ... read more

After dumping our stuff in the Nsele chalet we added even more deet and headed off with Olaf for a sunset game drive to Thornybush reserve. The vehicle was a big 4 wheel drive, completely open with the windscreen flat against the bonnet. The seats were elevated to get better game view and there was a tracker perched right on the front. The sides were a bit battered and I wondered what all the dints and scrapes were from... I was about to find out. Olaf apologised in advance for the bumpy ride we were about to experience which was a little unnerving and we headed for Thornybush game reserve. Within minutes our tracker spotted the footprints of white rhino and sure enough there they were peacefully grazing on the grass a few yards from the ... read more

After a pretty monster drive along back roads and sandy tracks we were greeted at Nsele Lodge by Afrikaans Olaf and Stephanie, their friendly staff and crazy dogs. Another hidden gem of a place to stay thanks to Acacia. We each had a small thatched chalet with mosquito nets which were turned down for you and an ensuite - ahhh nice! As we were in a malaria area we were both dripping with deet and armed with numerous mosquito repelling devices - Neil swiping at any insect that came anywhere near. Nsele lodge is like a home from home. There was a big long table stretched out for shared dining, the dogs now calm were tucked up on their beds and we enjoyed pre dinner drinks round the open fire before the drum boomed that dinner ... read more

The most memorable experience was our encounter with elephants! We stopped the jeep a safe distance away from the herd who were enjoying the high green leaves from a tree. The first female and youngster passed our vehicle watching us out of the corner of their eyes -it was amazing to see these huge, magnificant mammals wandering passed so closely. The second female was not content with only walking passed - she stopped a matter of metres away and starred at us - she wasn't showing any agressive behaviours but was interested in who or what we were. She kept approaching - Neil and I mouthed OMG at each other as the guide warned us to stay still and not to move. Neil put the video camera down and we all held our breath and waited ... read more

Animal time!!! Soon after we left the mountains we reached the area where Kruger and the surrounding private game reserves are located. In fact, had the visibility been better in the mountains, we could have seen Kruger from some of the lookout points we stopped at. You basically come down the mountain, pass some farmlands, and then there you are surrounded by game reserves . Before we went to Kruger we did one night at the Pezulu Tree House Game Reserve. This place was out of this world!!! Because there are no big five animals (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo) in the private game reserve that Pezulu is on – you don’t have to have fences surrounding your camp. So we were literally walking around amongst the animals. We saw giraffe, zebras, monkeys, warthogs, ... read more
