South Africa is a wierd place. So much beautiful scenery, but the cities are unappealing and downright dangerous. The city of Nelspruit, our first real destination in South Africa, is no exception. After hearing several stories of muggings involving knives, we decided to try to get out of there instantly and into the Kruger National park. We'd planned to sign up for a guided trip, like the ones we'd done in Kenya and Uganda, until we heard the price - an outrageous US$280 each for a day trip! In the end, we organized a hire car and purchased a mosquito-net-tent from some other backpackers, instantly saving a total of $320 and gaining an extra full day in the park - not a bad deal! I'm pleased to say that Kruger far exceeded my expectations. We entered ... read more

Our first week travelling started off with a relaxing drive to Nelspruit. The roads are just so empty, the drivers are very polite, the scenery is beautiful, lots of mountains and lakes and the day was sunny and hot. We stopped off en route for lunch at the South African equivalent of a motorway cafe - although there is really no comparison. Milly's Star Stop is a restaurant set amidst green hills and the outside deck goes out over a trout lake. The food was delicious of course, that's one of the best things about being in another country, the food is always so different. We carried on to Marloth Park where we were going to spend our first couple of nights. This is a small village set in a game reserve. Although it doesn't have ... read more

When we left Livingstone in Zambia on Monday the 29th Ocotber,, we flew to Johannesburg where we picked up a bus and went directly to Nelspruit. When we left many years ago, Nelspruit was a little sleepy hollow near Kruger Park. NOw, it is a thriving metropolis, 400,00 people. We were picked up by our hosts Mari and Daan, who looked after us for the next 5 days. First they took us to a lovely pub for a quick meal ( we arrived at 8 pm, after a 3hour journey). When we finished our meal, they picked us up and took us to our lodgings, Chez Vincent, a beautiful B and B. The next morning, after a lovely breakfast we were picked up by D & N and started on our new adventure. We visited the ... read more

Our Journey started on Oct 14th from London Gatwick, after goodbyes with the family we were headed off to Dubai. Stopover in Dubai gave Lynda a taste of home many years ago and three stopover hours later (that included lots of coffee, people watching - a real global melting pot, some long-leg watching, and some snoozing) we were finally headed for Africa! We arrived at Joburg airport tired and with slight trepidation of what was to come... the usual headaches of immigration and bags were fine and we went through where our friend Tanya was collecting us. She was delayed and we realised that we didn't have her phone no, her address and our lovely new global roaming phone wouldn't work. Perfect...so a few interesting minutes waiting until she appeared, we were very glad to see ... read more

Diversity Can Be Amazing And It Can Be Challenging Kel has written a section below on South African culture which will explain the title of this blog better than I can. Instead, I’m gonna continue to focus on some of the most fun I’ve had on this whole crazy one year tour. SAFARI! I was such a skeptic when Kel brought up this safari idea, but thanks to her persuasiveness we came anyway. I now have to admit, she was completely right. Hands down, I can say that my time in Kruger National Park was the most fun, the most surreal and most amazing time I’ve had, ever! If you are into animals, photography, or both, you have to find a way to come to Africa. The experience was just amazing!! Getting Up At 5am ... read more

... read more

After 18 hours stuffed in plane, I made it in one piece to Johannesburg. The S. African next to me asked me upon landing, "Are you ready to fall in love?" Its an apt slogan, as South Africa sure is a pretty amazing place. The guy at the Hostel I stayed used to work in Kruger as a ranger on anti-poaching missions. He seemed quite hardcore and asked if I was scared of lions. I said "not yet" and he said "you will be," but didn't use a raspy Yoda-type voice for effect. I was in Kruger the next day and saw my first elephants, giraffes, and impalas. I'd see tons more the next week and a half. I've only seen two lions and three rhinos so far, but tons and tons of everything else (except ... read more

The Pictures Speak For Themselves It seemed like a crazy thing to even consider this late in our trip. Here we had spent almost 5 months straight in Europe and the surrounding area and were getting on a plane to head as far south in Africa as we could get. As we left our hotel in Barcelona, at 6pm on Tuesday, I wondered how I had let Kel talk me into a crazy trip a quarter of the way around the world. Really, she can be pretty persuasive when she wants to be. After five years of marriage you know someone pretty well and know their weak spots. If aimed correctly, an argument, for or against something, can really knock a person over if their defenses are breached, and breach my defenses she did. Back ... read more

Change of plan, Rob (Hostel manager) came to us about 10 minutes after I wrote the last blog and said that there was now enough people to do the Kruger tour on Friday. Obviously we jumped around all excited for a while before getting down to the important business of packing. So, 5:30 friday morning, bleary eyed and grumbling we managed to get ourselves showered dressed and onto the mini bus. Little did we know we were in for a 8 hour journey up to the park itself! Not helped of course by the fact that we got lost in Pretoria for about an hour looking for somewhere that we were picking another girl up from. So we finally arrived at lunchtime, where we dumped our bags in the tent and headed straight to the swimming ... read more

So we have arrived in Johannasburg after an uncomfortable 19-hour journey from Cape Town. Our aim is to visit Kruger national park. This park is the size of Israel and is home to a multitude of animals including the 'BIG 5' - Buffalo, Elephants, Lions, Leopards and Rhino. Its a 500km drive from Jo'burg and as part of the tour, we visited some interesting spots along the way including 'gods window' (called so because of its endless landscape and uninterrupted views). Bourke’s luck potholes, which was once occupied at the height of the gold rush, (ironically, Bourke didn't discover the potholes first and ultimately didn't get to prosper from its riches). We also visited the blyde river Canyon (the third largest canyon in the world) - an impressive site. Our day ended with an overnight stay ... read more
