Thursday was our longest lie in for a week – we only had to be up in time for breakfast at 8.00am. We set off with Connor and our friends from the previous night for a boat trip in the St Lucia estuary. Further towards the sea there are lots of boats, but the lodge has sole rights to the water further inland. The boat was a small catamaran with an engine, designed for shallow waters. It was piloted by Warwick, a delightful and very knowledgeable chap of 84. He was recently widowed and taking people out on boat trips gave him the opportunity to meet new people. We saw plenty of hippos, but sadly none of them wanted to come out of the water, so all we saw were groups of bobbing eyes and ears, ... read more

We enjoyed a positive lie in this morning, only needing to get up at 6.30 for a 7.00am departure. After a cloudy start the sun came out and the day heated up. We drove to the bottom of the western shores of the St Lucia estuary, then crossed over and re-entered the park at the main gate to the eastern shores. The landscape was totally different to Manyoni. It’s flat, apart from a row of hills by the shoreline, which turned out to be massive sand dunes, covered in small trees and bushes. The vegetation is also sparser, and broken up by pools of water filled with rushes and water lilies. We drove past a couple of groups of hippos, the first basking in the water with just their ears and nostrils visible, but the second ... read more

iSimangaliso Wetland Park In the afternoon the VESA African Unearth group headed of to the nearby iSimangaliso Wetland park for a nature walk with Johan, one of our group leaders at the Crocodile Centre in St. Lucia. Johan is very knowledgeable about Nile crocodiles and also about the St. Lucia wetland area. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a huge protected area along the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It is also Johan's favourite place as he shared with us some childhood stories such as the time a tourist went swimming in the Lake, which is not allowed due to crocodiles. The tourist was banned for life from the property. In another story, there was a bride cheating with another man swimming in the lake. A crocodile got her and she was later found downstream in pieces. After the walk we ... read more

Night Safari at iSimangaliso Wetlands Park On our last day of volunteering, we had the opportunity to go on a night safari at iSimangaliso Wetlands Park. Some of the interesting wildlife we saw on safari include monkeys, guinea fowls, zebra, cape buffalo and kudus. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is South Africa's third largest protected area and the word iSimangaliso means "a miracle" in Zulu. The park is now a world heritage site because of its rich ecosystem and natural beauty. Other animals that you can see in the park include elephants, African leopards, black and white rhino, whales, dolphins and turtles. In December 2013, African lions were reintroduced into the park. Mission Rock Beach Halfway through our safari, we got the opportunity to leave our safari vehicle and go for a walk in the park. We walked ... read more

For so many years we always drove past Kosi bay, just wanting to get to Mozambique. This time we decided after spending a week in Mozambique we would spend a couple of days to see what we have missed all this time. Sunset cruise: After leaving Mozambique on the Wednesday, we drove into Manguzi to stock up on some fresh supplies and then headed for Kosi Bay Lodge where we were booked for 3 nights in a self catering chalet. Lovely rustic log cabins with a wooden deck in amongst the coastal forest. There was a sunset cruise on the lakes leaving at four with another couple, so we decided to go on that as well. We met Gavin and Lee, the other couple at reception and walked with them through part of a beautiful forest ... read more

Adieu Wildnis, welcome at the Beach.. Aber vorher waren wir noch tanken (es haben sich drei Leute um das Auto gekümmert: einer hat getankt, einer die Scheiben ... read more

K - We have just spent a great week “killing time” as we wait for our Indian visas which we applied for in Durban last Monday. We were told they would take 5 to 7 working days so we headed off to the Drakensberg – a mountain region in South Africa. Absolutely stunning – yet again the photos don’t do it justice (have I taken any photos that do anything justice I wonder?!). We energetically did a couple of hikes in the beautiful mountains and treated ourselves to a lovely B&B on a farm where we were upgraded to a cottage. This was fortuitous as there was a big electrical storm that night and the tent would definitely not have been fun. As usual we managed to adopt a couple of stray animals – in addition ... read more

Hi, Attached photos from last blog. I have also attached the narrative again for completeness. Barbara & John in Kwa Zulu Natal (KZN) We have spent two weeks in KZN and it has been a varied period covering wonderful scenery, cultural interest and good beaches. My birthday saw us on the road to Ramsgate on a 9 hour journey. It was good to be leaving what I thought was quite a strange farm and farmer’s wife. The view over the dam and hills set in a lovely garden was very picturesque but I will always remember the haunting feeling in the creaky floored bedroom. Despite the fact that we were out of the highland area the scenery at times was stunning. Our first day in Ramsgate was for chill, spending some time on a private beach. ... read more

The adventure tales are about to begin so sit back in a comfy chair, get a good cup of tea and settle in. Now, where did I leave you last…..oh yes, the night drive. We had decided on the Jo-A-Lize guest house on the main strip in St Lucia based partly on the price and choice of rooms, and mostly on the overwhelming honesty of our host. River boat tours? No, don’t waste your money, they’re rubbish. Just go down to the Ski Club, have a pint and watch the crocs and hippo’s from there. Night drive? A must, and you have to go with Kian, he’s the best around, I’ll book you for tonight. Kian was Kian Barker of Shaka Barker Tours, and we quickly discovered why he was the best. At 8pm sharp we ... read more
