Tage wie dieser....
Published: January 14th 2012Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland Park...
Adieu Wildnis, welcome at the Beach..
Killing time!
Published: September 20th 2011Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland ParkK - We have just spent a great week “killing time” as we wait for our Indian visas which we applied for in Durban last Monday. We were told they would take 5 to 7 working days so we headed off to the Drakensberg – a mountain region in South Africa. Absolutely stunning – yet again the photos don’t do it justice (have I taken any photos that do anything justice I wonder?!). We energetically did a couple of hikes in the beautiful mountains and treated ourselves to a lovely B&B on a farm where we were upgraded to a cottage. This was fortuitous as there was a big electrical storm that night and the tent would definitely not have been fun. As usual we managed to adopt a couple of stray animals – in addition ... read more
Missed photos from Kwa Zulu Natal
Published: March 27th 2011Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland ParkHi, Attached photos from last blog. I have also attached the narrative again for completeness. Barbara & John in Kwa Zulu Natal (KZN) We have spent two weeks in KZN and it has been a varied period covering wonderful scenery, cultural interest and good beaches. My birthday saw us on the road to Ramsgate on a 9 hour journey. It was good to be leaving what I thought was quite a strange farm and farmer’s wife. The view over the dam and hills set in a lovely garden was very picturesque but I will always remember the haunting feeling in the creaky floored bedroom. Despite the fact that we were out of the highland area the scenery at times was stunning. Our first day in Ramsgate was for chill, spending some time on a private beach. ... read more
Hippopotamuses & Fire Ants
Published: July 8th 2010Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland ParkThe adventure tales are about to begin so sit back in a comfy chair, get a good cup of tea and settle in. Now, where did I leave you last…..oh yes, the night drive. We had decided on the Jo-A-Lize guest house on the main strip in St Lucia based partly on the price and choice of rooms, and mostly on the overwhelming honesty of our host. River boat tours? No, don’t waste your money, they’re rubbish. Just go down to the Ski Club, have a pint and watch the crocs and hippo’s from there. Night drive? A must, and you have to go with Kian, he’s the best around, I’ll book you for tonight. Kian was Kian Barker of Shaka Barker Tours, and we quickly discovered why he was the best. At 8pm sharp we ... read more
Week 20 Bhanga Nek
Published: January 13th 2009Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland ParkWhere is Bhanga Nek exactly? Well it’s definitely not a easy place to find. Basically if you head north along the coast towards the Mozambique border there are a series of estuarine lakes, which form part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park. Bhanga Nek is the spit of land which separates the sea from the lakes. It’s a very out of the way place with access from Manguzi settlement down a series of seriously rough roads which turn into deep sandy tracks. It’s only accessible by 4WD vehicles and you can see why. It takes low range with diff lock on to get up some of the hills and we were frequently stuck in deep sand which required reversing back and taking a run up. Having booked a campsite a long time back (since it’s ... read more

Welcome to Africa! Ueberhaupt erinnert uns vieles an ... read more
From Jo'burg to St. Lucia
Published: August 25th 2007Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland ParkHi Everybody! Just wanted to let you know that I am safe and healthy in St. Lucia South Africa. Sorry about not emailing or updating- It has been super busy with no internet access and non-stop traveling. Let me give you an update: I think I last emailed from Maun... or was it Jo'burg???? Well... I am going to say it was Jo'burg... So I survived my two nights in Jo'burg. The first night we stayed in Mufasa Backpackers on the outskirts of town- nothing too exciting to tell you about. The next morning Marnie and I went with Sarah and Boris on a taxi tour of Jo'burg and it's townships (the shanty poor, poor, poor neighbourhoods). It was so different than i expected! I though that Jo'burg was going to be completely fortified and scary ... read more
St Lucia We left Swaziland for St. Lucia and made sure we stuck to the main roads, although we had a much busier border crossing with big queues. St. Lucia town is a little strip of restaurants, shops and hotels. We checked into our flat and met Debbie the crazy dog lover who works in the Stokkiesdraai office. We opened our apartment to find it could sleep 6 and had a lovely view of the wetlands. Debbie warned us not to venture too far down our garden in the evening, just in case we bumped into any crocs or hippos lurking at the waters edge. Apparently a hippo had been seen wandering around the gardens recently - and these creatures are real killers in Africa. We walked down to the beach, which turned out to be ... read more
3 Days in Paradise
Published: April 23rd 2007Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » iSimangaliso Wetland ParkThe past 3 days (after leaving Kruger on 21 April) were spent relaxing in beautiful St. Lucia on the Elephant Coast (South Africa's NE coast to the layman). Driving from Kruger to St. Lucia was quite the experience--lots and lots of sugarcane fields, people walking, hitching, and selling pineapples, eucalyptus syrup, and avocados (which apparently grow like weeds), cattle, goats and sheep grazing right alongside (and crossing) the roads (another reason not to drive at night), the mainstreets of run-down, mostly black cities with their markets selling anything and everything, and the occasional checkpoint for foot and mouth disease (mainly when we drove through Swaziland). Seeing the differences in their way of life, and the poverty that encompassed it was overwhelming. We arrived in St. Lucia (part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands--a UNESCO World ... read more
