Now back from my marathon fall break (easter break is fall break here), I’m going to try to give a rundown of all the fun things in sparknotes style because I wrote a full journal of the break for myself and it is very very long. So here goes: 18/03 Took kombis (mini-bus taxis) to Swaziland, with Kyla, Lauren, Stephanie (Lauren friend), Caitlin. Swaziland is an independent kingdom surrounded mostly by South Africa and shares a small border with Mozambique. It is made up mostly of people from the Swati tribe; it has a king (King Mswati III), who reigns will total authority. The king chooses a wife each year and can pick any woman in the country that he sees, regardless of her will, age, or marital status. 19/03 We went on a full day ... read more

Hey everyone- Happy Easter! Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who sent me Birthday Wishes- meant a lot to me to get them all the way down here! I know I haven't written in a while- I'm slowly but surely trying to catch up- and I promise I'm not going to be as annoyingly detailed from now on. My parents are due here in Durban in about a half-hour so I'm going to keep this one short. I will try to do a good job on writing about the time my parents are here (I'm so excited to see Cape Town!!) but at the same time I don't want to take away any time that I will get to spend with my parents so I might have to do it after they leave. Hope ... read more

Geo: -29.853, 31.0164We stayed on the 14th floor of this incredible condominium with abreathtaking view of the coast. The centre of Durban to theright, the beach in front and the Eastern Coast sprawling to theleft. Iny was so gracious as a host. We can´t thank her andher family enough for coming to our rescue with a home exchange whenour exchange in Cape Town feel apart. What a lovelysetting. We enjoyed some wonderful restaurants (Il Maurice, BeanBag Cafe & more) and took turns cooking gourmet meals, enjoying theincredible view from the balcony. We rented a car and took a dayto explore up to Zululand, learning about the Zulu culture and anotherday to Shakaland in Durban. Shakaland was a mix of a wild waterpark with an aquarium. Happy St Patrick's Day to those at home, our version of celebrating St Pattys day took the form of a student protest that shut down the campus! It was a very large, lively, exciting and (most importantly) peaceful protest. The issue was the same as last time- the administration has still not helped students get their promised housing and this time the strike was successful at causing enough ruckus to bring the intended attention on themselves. I got some great shots from in front, behind, above, and within the crowd, the best of them are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/mpruce/StudentStrikeAtUKZN But this post is about a field trip that I went on last week with my ceramics class to the Mgwaze clan homestead, about 3 hours outside of Pietermaritzburg. The Clan is the subdivision of tribe, which is ... read more

Few people appreciate what a spectacular harbour Durban has; probably because it has no notable buildings or identifiable landmarks to give it prominence. Nevertheless, its narrow entrance, flanked by impressive beaches to north and south opens to a large basin within which is the commercial harbour and cruise ship terminal. Durban is a large city but we're inclined to say not particularly interesting. Unfortunately, Durban had a very bad press before we arrived. Passengers from previous cruises and those who otherwise knew the city reported it is particularly crime prone with a high incidence of muggings. We were warned on the MSVG to be particularly vigilant and to move around in groups. We had decided to jump ship here and fly to Cape Town so had attempted to book a hotel online in Mauritius only to ... read more

Before I start on my weekend in Durban, I "quiet posted" a write up on my last few weekends (quiet means no emails went out- because I don't want to send out too many emails from the blog). It will be filed before the Grey Area post. Onward- This past weekend I had a great excursion to Durban and here is the story: We headed out to Durban on Friday evening- right after my last class. The 'We' is Guthrie, Lyle, Julian, Kyla, Lauren, Caitlin and I- we caught a Kombi from town (R35, appr 4 USD, for a 45 minute ride) and found our way to the flat of 12 American girls going to school in Durban, who were letting us crash at their place. We took metered taxis to and from the Indian food ... read more

Hi everyone. I know some of you have been wondering where I've been, or where my blogs have been...some of you have been glad of the break from the onslaught of emails saying I've posted something. Either way, I've just wanted to let you know that I'm back! We've had a whole bunch of trainings and other events that have prevented me from keeping everyone updated. It's good that I've been busy, and that means that I have a lot to write about but it has also meant that I haven't had as much time to write about those events. I will be cutting down on my details which will make some of you happy. I apologize if they have been "rambly", but I'm just writing my thoughts about things that have been happening here. These ... read more

Friday Feb 15 Got to “sleep in” a little bit this morning. Dave and Matt went with Nothi (Naughty)- the coach who has been seriously ill for the past few months, to the hospital again. Raquel and I got into work around 915 and it was too late for me to talk to anyone in the US. Had a meeting with Laura and Douwie about the city but there wasn’t much to talk about so we just socialized for a bit. I went across to the Canon place to see if their internet was working yet.. nope. It just makes me laugh b/c they’ve gone a whole week with no internet working for them… they’ve probably lost some good business. I was thinking how in America, that wouldn’t last a day…or even an hour!! Maybe I’ll ... read more

Hello all, I'm taking a break from the sweltering heat of this African summer to do an update of last few exciting things that have happened. I'm going to wait to post this until I have pictures- which means gathering pictures from different people because my camera has still yet to arrive. Rewinding back to two weekends ago (23/03), I decided to stay in town to relax and stop spending so much money. On Saturday I went on a day trip with Caitlin (from Cali), Kelly, Susan, and James (from South Africa) to Umgeni Worldview and then this area called Karkloof Falls- its a huge river that goes over a couple smaller falls and then one gigantic fall. Umgeni Worldview is an overlook point, from which you can see all of Pietermaritzburg (PMB is the city ... read more

I decided to make a whole post about daily life because its an important part of being here but its hard to slip things into the other stories- they sound better when you leave out the details. Here goes (I'll probably jump around a bit and, unfortunately, have no pictures to include): I called this post 'life in the grey area' because it seems that, racially, I (and some of the other americans) belong in a grey area of sorts. We are not black, so we get along fine in white social circles and people feel comfortable talking about whatever they want around us- and yes, black south africans know we are not afrikaaner (Afrikaaners are the descendents of the dutch settlers who came to south africa many years ago and first discovered the 'uncivilized natives') ... read more
