I was on lions today, so when I got there, two people headed off to sanctuary while the rest of us went on in with the J litter. They can be a little roudy in the morning but you just have to get them to behave and go lay down and then their fine. We had everyone raking because someone else had taken all the shovels, but there were hardly any leaves, so it was kind of pointless. Finally we got a shovel and picked up the poop. There was so much! Tams walked by and asked if we were okay and we said yeah, theres just poop of like 10 lions in here this morning! People must have missed some the previous days. Oh well, mistakes happen. Once that was done, we ate some yummy ... read more

Up early today because I was taking care of the tiger babies. I wasn't taking this as my day off, and it was nice weather outside so I would actually be able to walk them! YAY! Once I got up there, I discovered that we would actually be taking them to an empty enclosure to let them run around. Just as awesome. I went down to feed Ruby her bottle while Tams put the harness on. I then took her up the boardwalk and helped her into the truck. While driving, I had to hold her by the leash and the harness. Easier said than done, because that leaves no hands to steady yourself during the bumps and I had Judah jumping on my back. It was worth it though, once we got to the enclosure. ... read more

Waking up to the sound of rain on a tin roof is much more comforting to me than it is to most people. Unfortunately that does mean that the day will bite the big one because we wont have any animal time. I had to walk to the restaurant in the rain because there was no break and when you get there you just have to try to wait out the rain. It was basically impossible to wait out the rain because it never stopped. We actually ate breakfast before we were able to go out to see the animals. While eating, Tams said that since it was supposed to continue raining all day we could go to the mall. It was some people's last full day so they didn't want to go, but I certainly ... read more

So today I woke up like any other day but I wasn't feeling well so I actually really wanted to sleep and not get up. But unfortunately, that is not an option, so instead I trudged on down to the restuarant. Today was hyena day, so I let the newer people walk them since I have already done it and as they were walking, I went in and picked up the ribs as someone else picked up poop. Once that was finished, they went on down to servals to clean up their enclosure and I fed the hyenas once they got back. The lions were fed an ostrich last night and there were feathers everywhere! So I asked the lion group if they needed any help picking everything up, but they said they were good, so ... read more

So today we took another day off! There were a bunch of people who wanted to go bungee jumping this week so away we went. I didn't jump again because I didn't have enough money, otherwise I would have went off backwards like they told me to. Instead I chilled in the cliffhanger's pub with Delano and Gee. Gee was too scared to jump and Delano had to drive us, and on his birthday no less! So to make it better, I bought him a nice birthday breakfast :) I can see why Delano likes bringing us to bungee so much, they play the jumps on a big screen in the pub so you can watch them. Kathy was the first one to jump, but she was terrified and they actually had to push her which ... read more

Hyena day! I got to walk Ed! Its the first time I've walked anything so it was exciting! He's not a very good walker but we eventually made it through. He just had to sniff everything! The zebra poop, the bushes, my shoes, everythingg! At one point Shanzi got really excited and since she has a faux penis it became erect and she started licking it....quite a sight seeing a hyena give herself a blowjob.... Anyway....once we got back to the restaurant, we made breakfast and then got a talk from Tams. Nothing really, just reminders and stuff. After that, a bunch of people went to the school and to the boardwalk, I was gunna go but there were a lot of people who wanted to go and since I've already been, I decided to stay. ... read more

Ahh today is another day of good-byes unfortunately and these people are going to be really hard to say good bye to since I've worked with them so closely for two weeks! I'll remember each and everyone of them forever. But first I have to take care of the lions this morning. Nothing interesting happened, they were all sleeping today, but I did get to feed Joshy his bottle. It was just a little hard because there were only 3 people in our group to do all the work, but we got it done of course! After breakfast, I said goodbye to Alex because she was going down to the cabins early and I wouldn't be able to talk to her before I got back from meat prep. I tried to get someone else to go ... read more

Because of the high amount of alcohol consumed last night by the other volunteers, the members of my group did now show up to work on time this morning which messed everything up. The hyenas waited far too long to go for the walk because we were waiting for other people to show up. Since they waited so long, they were in rare form and we couldn't walk them because they wouldn't behave. When you walk hyenas, you need to have 2 people walking them and 1 person in the enclosure picking up ribs and changing their water. They get very territorial about their ribs so you always have to sneak them out when they aren't there. They also aren't big fans of people touching their water bowl. I don't know why because we are just ... read more

When you are on tigers, you have to be at the restaurant by 7 instead of 730 because the tigers need to be walked. I have yet to walk anyone because the weather is so crappy, and guess what! today was no exception. Instead we just picked up bones and poop and fed them their ribs. Today we were told to rake the enclosure and bury the leaves like in the lion enclosure. Well let me tell you, tigers love holes. Judah was so amazed by the whole we dug, he wouldn't leave it alone and we weren't able to finish. It was frustrating but he's just so cute you can't get upset! One of the good things about being on tigers is that you get to bottle feed them in the morning and at night. ... read more

Today was lion day once again, so I limped on down to the restaurant and went in with the tigers. All you have to do for the lions is take out the bones, rake and pick up poop, they are normally the easiest. But today, we had to rake the entire enclosure and turn over all the sand and it just takes foreverrr! The only good thing is we use red rakes because they don't like the color red so they stay away from us, not like we couldn't handle it anyway, but we could turn our backs to them and we were fine because we knew they wouldn't come after us. The worst part is definitely taking the bones out, they just get so possessive of them that you almost have to sneak them out ... read more
