Multinational corporations and rich nations are really the reasons behind all the struggles that Sierra Leone was facing, not so much the bad government. There was a civil war between the R.U.F. rebels and the government that tore Sierra Leone apart over diamonds and cause millions to become refugees in neighboring countries. The issue wasn't that there were diamonds found there itself, rather, the want and desire for diamonds in rich countries drives corporations to receive diamonds. Since Sierra Leone has diamonds, corporations looked to that country to supply the demand. With money to be made, the rebels wanted to take over and smuggle the diamonds themselves because the money they would make keeps the civil war running. The rebels want a change in government and the smuggled diamonds funded the guns and ammo they needed to keep fighting. If corporations stopped buying diamonds from conflict zones, then there would be no funding for the civil war.
