If you knew me, and you really knew yourself, you would not have killed me." That was a quote engraved on the wall of the Genocide Memorial Museum in Kigali, Rwanda. Kate and I took a visit to the memorial and it was as tough to go through as I had imagined. There were three parts of the memorial, and we started out slowly, going through the exhibit that just explained Genocide and gave some information about all of the genocides throughout history. That part was bearable, not too personal. I thought I would be OK. I was wrong. The second part we went into was a memorial to the children that were killed in the Genocide. There were blown up pictures of these gorgeous, smiling, care free children and a plaque underneath each one explaining ... read more

A retroactive entry from last weekend... But first, let me tell you a bit about the Maranyundo School for Girls in Nyamata, Rwanda. Kate Harrington, one of the most amazing and gifted people I know, and you know that if you know her, is teaching English at this all girls boarding school. I have come to visit her and hang out. On the side of the road, barefoot boys lounge in the tall grass; farmers swing their hoes and spades; women balance bundles of manioc on their colorfully wrapped heads, stopping to adjust the infants on their backs. Centuries collide on these terraced hills, cultivated by Rwandan villagers and paved by ... read more

the phone rang about 10 after 7 in the morning. i thought it was the wake up call. "hello." "please hold for your call." ooh, a call. "yello" "hello audrey? it's werabe" (my coworker). "hi." "the driver will come pick you immediately to go to akagera." "i thought we were leaving at 8." "no. you must leave now to get there. are you ready?" "no." "ok, he'll pick you at 7:30." "ok. no problem." 8:15 on the nose we left for akagera, rwanda's 3rd national park, and only big game park. akagera used to be a huge park, where, according to my guide, you could see an animal "every 1 meter." now it is 1/3 its original size because when the war ended in '94 they used 2/3 of the land to relocate refugees who returned ... read more
