Happy July 4th to everyone!! I definitely was thinking about all of you this week and missing the shore, fireworks, bar-b-q's and other patriotic things that we do back there. It was funny, when I was writing the date on the blackboard at school, and I wrote 4th of July, and asked if anyone knew why this date was important to me, no-one knew and I was actually surprised by that since they know everything else about American life...our politics, our music, our celebrities...but not our Independence Day...anyway.... So, 2 weekends ago, I decided to go on a self-prescribed field trip with my 2 buddies. I've already told you all about Anna...my 13 year old side-kick who I just adore. The other one is a 16 year old boy named Gregory, who lives at my ... read more

After exiting Cheetah Park.. we drove out of the heavily wooded landscape, and gradually enters the gravel plains of Namibia.. today's drive was really beautiful.. you just watch in awe as you see the landscape change so drastically in front of your eyes.. and so many changes in half a day's drive.. The first upland area you take note of is Brandeberg.. or the Fiery Mountains.. known for the fiery looks it projects at sunset.. it's really a beautiful rock, and it's the highest mountain in Namibia.. there were some rock paintings by the old tribes in the mountains as well.. we stopped at the little town nearby with a supermarket to restock our supplies.. wished we could do Brandberg as well in this trip.. After the supply stop.. we drove for another 2 hours and ... read more

I climbed up one of them- not quite to the top- it was harder than it looked either large steep slopes of big boulders and fining a way down which didn’t involve falling down a crevice was more difficult than expected but most importantly I made it down in time for dinner! ... read more

After the relative luxury of 3 nights in a hostel we were back to earth with a bang: camping with no facilities, including water. Our first stop was the Cape Cross Seal Colony. Thousands of seals, a lot of them babies and some of them being seagull/jackal-eaten carcasses. The smell was just unbelievable. According to a plaque, Cape Cross was discovered by a Portugese who erected a cross where he landed. The cross fell to pieces and the remains are now in Berlin, but 100 years ago a replica was put up. Subsequently to this, about 10 years ago a rather pedantic historian concluded that the replica had been put up 10m away from the correct location. So now there are 2 identical replica monuments 10m apart. We stopped off in a town to buy ... read more

Swakopmund to Spitzkoppe Africa » Namibia » Spitzkoppe By jenronOctober 9th 2006 A delayed departure as the truck had still not been repaired in time, so we headed out into Swakopmund to do some extra shopping. We left at 11:30am stopping at the incredibly foul swelling seal colony. The beach is littered with dead seals and their skeletons with the occasional scavenging jackal. The actual seal numbers are quite low at this time of year. A few seals bobbed around in the rough seas and a few rested on the shore. We then set off on largely smooth and tarmacced road through flat desert landscapes. Suddenly the huge granite masses of the Sptizkoppe mountains loom out of the desert. They are stunningly b... read more
