Nothing too exciting to report yet... I had two meetings today, then came back and did some work at the hotel. Actually I feel crummy, and I'll tell you why. Native Mozambicans can't afford to eat in restaurants or things like that, so I feel like a big heel eating in restaurants. Today, ate in a room full of expats for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, served by the people whose country that we're in. I can't explain really how that feels... But it makes me feel really bad. Especially because we are all here from development organizations. You name it, and they are here - Gates, USAID, UNFPA, UNAIDS, the World Food Programme, CDC, etc., plus all the aid organizations from other countries... But, I can see the Mozambique Channel from my hotel room window, it ... read more

Mozambique has had a tough time of it lately, dear reader, in spite of the enormous strides made by her people towards a peaceful society since the conclusion of the civil war fifteen years ago. Leaving aside the serious floods in the year 2000; the last few months has seen a munitions factory on the outskirts of Maputo go up in flames and subsequently turn the city into a mini war zone, then a category five cyclone with 300 kilometre an hour winds ripped through the resort town of Vilankulo. These setbacks are hitting the local population hard, but the people of Mozambique are still smiling and laughing in spite of difficult times. The last journal left off in Tofo, and my travels in this fascinating country continue... I headed back to Inhambane in a chapa ... read more

There is something magical about Africa and her people, and after a week back in the mighty continent the people of Mozambique have rekindled the magic. It comes from the easy laughter of the locals who are always joking and laughing whatever the occasion; whether they are riding on the minibus, browsing at the markets, or walking along the beach. Mozambique is a portugese speaking country in Southern Africa, which is a little more than a decade out of civil war, and heading into a brighter future with the encouragement and support of South Africa just across the border. I flew from Sydney to Johannesburg, the lovely reader, and then took a connecting SAA flight to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Maputo is known as the only latin capital in Africa, complete with salsa clubs for ... read more

Escape from Tofo Yes, I finally left Tofo, though it was tough and not 100% of my own accord. I was aided by the kindness of very nice stranger. But even that took some effort. It required much debate between Helen and myself over breakfast; should we change hostels in Tofo, go to Vilankulo, or do nothing. In the end we decided to mission to Vilankulo. I think this decision was aided by the intense ridicule I took at Tofo Scuba for not being gone yet. After packing up I thanked Helen profusely for providing me with the initiative and inspiration to move on. Apparently I wasn’t the only one that thought I was weak. Katie had told Helen that she was glad “Helen was going with me. Maybe it would inspire me to leave.” Feel ... read more

So, my friends. nothing goes immediatley here. this morning I took the plane, together with antony. the plane is a bit like a bus. it has many stops. so I went into the air in Maputo, and we landed again in Beira. Then 20 minutes later we took off again and the next stop was quelimane, my stop. Anthony flew one stop further to Nacala. I had no idea what was going to happen once I went of the plane. I heard some vague rumours in maputo that someone was going to pick me up. So I go out of the airport, that looks more like a trainstation with an identity crisis. and I wait ... and I wait .... and after 40 minutes Victor came to pick me up. He drove an old pickup and ... read more

My friends, So I arrived in Maputo. As you know, I had some communication problems in the beginning. But as soon as I arrived in the ADPP complex, it was all ok. I arrived here on Thursday morning, and I had to wait for the next flight to Quelemane, which is tomorrow (Tuesday). These last days were all about impressions and meeting new people. I will try to give a brief overview of my transit holiday. On Thursday I met the residents. There is an epf, vocational school, hope and tce project here, also a secondary school and the head office of all ADPP activities in Mozambique. ADPP stands for ajuda de desinvolvimente povo para povo. It is how they call humana in Portuguese speaking countries. In total there are about 6 DI’s working in ... read more

Hello my friends, So on wednesdaymorning i took the bus from Johannesburg to maputo, the capital of Mozambique. it was supposed to be an 8 hour trip. I had fixed seat reservations. When I gave my ticket before getting on the bus, the guy said. Well sir, that is downstairs in the middle (it was a dubbledeck bus), let me change that for you. I got the place upstairs all the way in front. I had a window in front of me. I had no idea how to feel about this. anyway, seeing the landscape change was quite spectacular. From mountains and rocks to streched fields. Passing suggarriet (don't know if it is the right term), bananaplantations, pickups filled with apples, ... Then we came at the border. Getting over it consists of two parts. Going ... read more

"You can check out but you can never leave." (thanks Eagles) I was sitting around the bar in Tofo the other night chatting with some of the Dive masters and such. I mentioned that I keep seeing people arrive here and never see people leave. She said, "Yes, this is like Hotel California." I agree. The other song lyric that comes to mind about Tofo is "Stayed here all season, don't know the reason, nothing to show but this brand new tatoo." That is Tofo. It seems to just suck you in. I've been planning on leaving in a few days for the last week. Still don't know when I'll leave. Maybe Friday, Saturday or Sunday... or not. But it has been great. I've had a blast diving. I actually took my Advanced Diver course. After ... read more

I left S. Africa via Swaziland about a week ago. And then I beelined up to Tofo in Mozambique. why? The Diving of course. So far the diving has been great. Well the diving is actually so/so but the snorkeling has been amazing. After our first time we surfaced to find about 20-30 whale sharks around our boat. For the next hour or so we snorkelled with, around, chased and were followed by whale sharks. This was totally special and insane. This is just a special, special event. I can't really explain it. Other than the dive master on our trip was excited and actually the first in the water with the sharks. He was maybe more or as excited as we were. Whale sharks move pretty slowly as they feed. So you can almost swim ... read more

Hola! Yes onto a portugese speaking country! SO whats happened since my last entry? Well we did the trek...well a rather depleted number of us as Eliza and J.D were unwell and Storm also opted out. So Rob (assistant leader) had to stay behind at a backpackers with them while me, Laura, Alex, Jon, other Alex, Abby and Dave (leader) went trekking in Malalotja reserve! It was beautiful and not TOO much hard work! We spent a total of 3 nights out there, and most days were fine until the last day which was the hardest walk ive ever done and hopefully WILL ever do!! about ten million mountain/hills to climb - with a massive backpack on.....NOT good! But it was very rewarding! So the trek spelled the end of our time in Swaziland - about ... read more
