Background: Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with independence in 1975. Large-scale emigration by whites, economic dependence on South Africa, a severe drought, and a prolonged civil war hindered the country's development. The ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) party formally abandoned Marxism in 1989, and a new constitution the following year provided for multiparty elections and a free market economy. A UN-negotiated peace agreement between FRELIMO and rebel Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) forces ended the fighting in 1992. In December 2004, Mozambique underwent a delicate transition as Joaquim CHISSANO stepped down after 18 years in office. His newly elected successor, Armando Emilio GUEBUZA, has promised to continue the sound economic policies that have encouraged foreign investment.

Robbery Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Vilanculos
Vilanculos might be worth visiting a couple of days. Be ware of thieves though. Robbery has increased and still is. Don't stay at "Dolphin Dows" I was assaulted by 4 guys who stole my handbag upon arrival. Junior, the owner of Dolphin Dhows, seemed at first very helpful and competent. He somehow got my bag back. Empty. He accompanied me to the Police. He knows both the Police and the thieves very well, he said. The Police wrote a list of missing items by hand on a piece of paper but I got no copy. After two days Junior and the [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! It's been a while since our last entry. Sorry no pictures right now, the computer here won't let Aaron download any photos. We've been kicking back on the beach in Mozambique. Our friend Martina owns a Nissan repair shop in Vilankulos and we stayed with her for almost a month. She is so much fun, we had a great time. It was really nice to just be in one spot for a while, also. Since she let us stay for free, we tried to cook some really nice meals for her. Which was fun and challenging. Aaron loves to [View Full Entry]

Update Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Vilanculos
As you have probably noticed with the scarcity of my updates... internet is not very available in the heart of Africa. I've been on an overland trip through Botswana, Zambia, Malawi and am now in Mozambique. The trip has been amazing so far and apparently great things to come in the last 5 days. I've seen elephants charging, I've dodged crocs and hippos, fallen down the falls... We are only 6 in our group including our fearless leader Chris so we have formed quite a nice little family. We had Jim and Lauren a father and daughter duo from Oz. Lauren [View Full Entry]

Mozambique was an absolute blast as expected. Our trip had three purposes; firstly to relax a bit, secondly to serve as a week of saying farewell to our friends and family and lastly as a place to do our commitment ceremony. Unfortunately as a result of logistics and circumstances, we could not get everyone that we wanted to be present to be there. There was a shortage of space and flights. We had 21 people in total and it was still an amazing week. We arrived on the 21st of July, with our parents, roz, Cailen and Bernhard´s sister, Ingrid. For [View Full Entry]

Mozambique has had a tough time of it lately, in spite of the enormous strides made by her people towards a peaceful society since the civil war ended nearly fifteen years ago. Leaving aside the serious floods in the year 2000, the last few months alone has seen a munitions factory on the outskirts of Maputo go up in flames and subsequently turn the city into a mini war zone, then a category five cyclone with 300km an hour winds ripped through the resort town of Vilankulo. These setbacks must be hitting the local population hard, but the people of Mozambique [View Full Entry]

Escape from Tofo Yes, I finally left Tofo, though it was tough and not 100% of my own accord. I was aided by the kindness of very nice stranger. But even that took some effort. It required much debate between Helen and myself over breakfast; should we change hostels in Tofo, go to Vilankulo, or do nothing. In the end we decided to mission to Vilankulo. I think this decision was aided by the intense ridicule I took at Tofo Scuba for not being gone yet. After packing up I thanked Helen profusely for providing me with the initiative and inspiration [View Full Entry]

On only a few occasions so far had we felt the need to increase our security measures. Port Elizabeth, Durban, Maseru and Maputo were all places that we were on higher alert, but in fairness to both Maseru and Maputo we were able to relax a little after settling in quickly to the feel of the place. Yet again through the backpacker grapevine, we'd been warned that our next stop, Vilankulo, was a hotspot for street crime, in particular bag snatching and muggings, so it was with a heightened awareness that we embarked on the next leg of our journey.
