Thank god for Imodium. Today we decided to "do" Rabat so that tomorrow we can move on. We got up pretty early due in part to the day spent in bed and in part to the massive hole in the roof which lets in a lot of light. Our first port of call was to walk to the Kasbah of which I had good expectations but was actually pretty disappointed. It was pretty grotty in comparison to most others and pretty insignificant. On the other side of the Kasbah there was a view point where you could look across at either the city or the harbor and bay. The beach below us was intermingled with a building site, but this hadn't stopped locals using it as a football pitch. We walked towards Le Tour Hassan and ... read more

When I woke up this morning my tummy was making way too much noise to be good. We made it to our new hotel Centre when I was really ill in a way that eerily echoed the beginning of Rob's illness last time. At first I thought it would be brief and that a look around Rabat would be feasible, but I kept on being sick and decided that bed was my safest option. Luckily for me being ill so soon after last time had diminished my energy supplies so I Managed to doze throughout the day. Rob ran out to get food and drink etc and even returned with a rose. (Romantic despite the event) He spent some time at the internet café next door but then returned for a pretty dull day with me. ... read more

We managed a pretty decent morning start, but our efforts were thwarted by the lethargy of the hotel staff. We ordered a breakfast and sat around for ages waiting for them to eventually arrive with a basket of toasted baguette, butter and apricot jam. The best thing about breakfast was the OJ followed by mint tea. (Don’t think about the sugar content) We had a quick stop to say goodbye to Anthony as we almost certainly won't bump into him again; he is heading north for a ferry back to Spain. We wanted one last walk around the medina before we left, so we wandered around the blue streets that were a lot quieter than yesterday. We managed to find a few of the places that Lonely Planet had pictured and replicated them. We didn't have ... read more

So I figured it was about time to add my entry on our trip to morocco (pictures to follow). Plans more or less went awry as they always will. Originally my friend Lucy and I were going to go to Casablanca to celebrate her birthday. Then the trip expanded to include two more friends, the more the merrier I believe. So as I mentioned we bought our tickets over 6 months ago on Spanair for Casablanca. Then a few months later EasyJet (a cheapie little airline in Europe) took up the route, meaning that Spanair had to put us on a different airline, Iberia (I hate Iberia, its as evil as...well something really evil). This resulted in us catching our flight at 8:30 pm instead of 12 pm like we had planned. We arrive at the ... read more

Am in the capital Rabat, waiting for visas for Mauritania and Mali. If they come through this afternoon then we should be heading off for Marrakesh this afternoon. Food is far too healthy with fresh vegetables in every meal!!! A distinct lack of grease.. Sky is blue and it is warm in the day - though still very chilly at night. The rest of the group are great - a mix of pohms, aussies and South Africans.... read more

It must seem as though my Long Service Leave was endless as you receive yet another Travelblog! I was only away for three months but the writing of the blogs is taking longer! I have now been home for six months and am making a valiant effort these holidays to finish my blogs. Bear with me! Rabat Since Independence in 1956, Rabat has remained the seat of government and home to the King. At present, that is King Mohammed VI. Rabat is largely a modern city with much more of a western influence in terms of dress and the roles of men and women. It has had a long history being first settled by indigenous people in the 8th Century and then later by the Phonecians and Romans. Morocco was a French protectorate from 1912 until ... read more

The primary purposes of our next two big cities were to obtain our visas for Mali and Mauritania. We also had lots of time in Rabat to take in some of the sites and catch up on laundry, internet and groceries. While we were in Rabat, we were staying at the Camping a la Plage, in Sale, which is across the water way from the main city. We were told that we could take a petit taxi from central Rabat back to our campsite. After doing a few errands in the city we decided to try. The driver was very kind and was quick to point out to the other drivers on the road why we almost got into 2 accidents along the way. They're all so friendly the way they hang out the window and ... read more

So, last night did my laundry, then slacked off and eventually fell asleep. Woke up in the middle of the night, then slept again till 7! haaa 10 hours of sleep.... not bad except a mosquito was around... Had a nice basic breakfast at the hostel. Then a Spanish/Argentina man came talking to me...we ended up travelling to Rabat together for the daytrip! This guy...I get so jealous coz he only works for about 6 months, then he gets this money from the government and then he travels for the other 6!!!!!WTF! I want his job!!!!! So we took the train to Rabat. Wow....Morocco has nice trains!! Leather seats .. and the train system is very systemized as well. Very impressive ne! After my uncles and cousin left on Saturday to go back to their respective homes, I got back on the train again and rushed up to Rabat to play a softball game. Unfortunately the game was cancelled due to tightened security at the American School. As far as I know the Rabat American School has the only baseball diamond in Morocco. Anyway, people were understandably nervous about the bombings that have been happening in Casablanca and shut the school for the weekend. This was the first game I have ever heard of being called on account of terrorism. But the upshot was I got to spend a bit of time being a tourist in Rabat. I didn’t have anybody to explain things to, which was just as well since I know very little about Rabat. But ... read more

Emily and I left our hostel at 6:15 the morning of the 5th to make it to the train station for our 7:15 train to Algeciras. We were much relieved upon arriving at the station to find our friends David and Pat (who had had similar issues getting to Granada) had actually arrived and were waiting for us at the train station. Thus, the four of us headed to Algeciras, ready to start our African adventure. Once we arrived at the port we searched for the ferry that would get us there the soonest, bought tickets, and went to check in. However, when we were almost at the front of the line, the guards turned us all around saying that the boat (for which we had purchased tickets) was full. Thus we ran back down, ... read more
