Here are my top 10 situations that I fear when travelling. the passenger behind me indelicate clinging to my seat fifty times (at least!) when he gets up to walk the aisle during the flight from Singapore / Paris, and which sometimes clings to my hair the way ... ... read more

Mauritius! We were only there for a short period of time, but while we were there it was a nice. It was a great opportunity to wind down from a crazy time in South Africa and from taking our midterms. The first day we got there was hectic because we weren’t really sure how to do things. We had to go to an ATM and every semester at sea student was there it seemed like. It took forever but then we finally got cash and had a game plan on what we were doing. We were going to hike up to a waterfall then jump off. SO FUN. It was about a 30 minute car ride through the town and before we knew it we were there. We took about a 10 minute hike in, then ... read more

After the excitement of safari, the second half of the honeymoon didn't start as smoothly as planned. We had already had our flights changed not long before the wedding and instead of flying directly from Nairobi to Mauritius we had to get up early to fly down to Johannesburg before catching a connecting flight to Mauritius. All was going well until the connecting flight was cancelled due to problems with the plane or some other rubbish. We were among three hundred or so unhappy people who had to be ferried to a local hotel, queue for a room and wait to hear what was happening. Thankfully we did catch a flight later that night but the whole thing could have been dealt with better and we missed a night in our lovely hotel. When we finally ... read more

A week in the lap of luxury at the Oberoi hotel in Mauritius. Four course breakfasts, deep sunken marble bath and polished marble floors, four poster bed and a health spa with your own jacuzzi. The service is amazing, there are 250 staff for 76 rooms! The location is lush, palm trees, exotic flowers and birds, with a back drop of mountains and sunsets across the Indian Ocean - when it's not raining. We're going to Rwanda tomorrow, we've never written that before...... read more

Well! After madly packing up the house, moving, unpacking, and cleaning our rental place, Clinton and I were ready at 11pm the night before we were to head off!!! Very very last minute job as per usual. We didn't get any shopping done so we're without quite a few important items! As I have just found out, we didn't bring our vaccination certificates with us which I've been freaking out over, however we've just been advised that a photocopy (which I have) *should* be ok, we just might be charged a fine for not having the original... every time we pass a border. It is very annoying.. but glad we can still go on the tour! We've done nothing in Mauritius as of yet. Both very jet lagged, and moving weary! Tomorrow we might go on ... read more

Our last day in Dubai began with a city tour of Dubai. We were driven around to Bur Dubai, Deira Dubai, King's Palace, GOld Soukh, Gold Centre, Burj Al Arab, Canal, Madinat Jumeriah etc etc. After the tour, we headed to the Karamah Shopping Complex and we all bought a few things and had a nice dinner at Karachi Darbhar Restaurant. We had a full meal with fresh juices and dessert for 80 Dhirams (20 bucks). We then headed back to our hotel and took a shuttle to the airport. On the shutle we met an interesting drunken fellow who had just come back from fighting in Kabul, Afghanistan. Our flight departing to Mauritius was at 2:30 am and the duty free shopping at the airport kept us occupied till then. Duty free sold everything including ... read more

1st leg to Mauritius

Published: May 22nd 2006Africa » Mauritius » Grand Bay

Our first visit to Mauritus Our flight from Melbourne left a bit later than scheduled, however they made the time up somewhere over the Indian Ocean. For the most part it was uneventful, but seemed to take forever. We landed on time in Plaisance and cleared customs in no time at all. Our first impression of the airport was that it was not unlike Fiji, but there was nobody hasslig us to buy this or that or to take their taxis, so it was quite pleasant... A guy called Manuèl met us with a sign and took us over to his van for the trip to the hotel... What can we say, but WOW that was some hell of a ride... The main highway in Mauritus is quite well built, but the traffic is something else... ... read more
