Background: Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu BANDA the country held multiparty elections in 1994, under a provisional constitution, which came into full effect the following year. Current President Bingu wa MUTHARIKA, elected in May 2004 after the previous president failed to amend the constitution to permit another term, has struggled to assert his authority against his predecessor, who still leads their shared political party. MATHARIKA's anti-corruption efforts have led to several high-level arrests but no convictions. Increasing corruption, population growth, increasing pressure on agricultural lands, and HIV/AIDS pose major problems for the country.

Malomo Africa » Malawi
Malomo It was a strange moment when I realized that with 99.9% confidence, I am living in by far the worst living conditions of anyone American I know; and I’ve made a few auzungu friends in Malawi… For the final push of the project I’m working on, we have moved out to a small trading center named Malomo, whose only significance is that it lies about half way between two serious trading centers - including Nkhotakota, see earlier blog post. Describing Malomo is tough, since first of all, there isn’t a large choice of things to describe, but second of [View Full Entry]

The lizard of Malawi Africa » Malawi » Northern » Karonga
From the Malawi border, I take a shared taxi to the first proper town, Karonga. I'm squeezed into the back seat with two women, a man, and two children. They're remarkably cheerful at the addition of this large, sweaty foreigner to their vehicle, though one woman's opening comment to me, in lieu of a greeting, is that I should give some money to her child. Later in the journey she tells me I have such soft skin, accompanied by a gratuitous fondle of my upper arm, and I recommend to her Aveeno daily moisturising lotion with natural colloidal oatmeal. My arrival [View Full Entry]

Back on the mainland, we drive through Tanzania to our next destination - Malawi, one of the poorest countries in Africa. Our main port of call is Lake Malawi, the vast body of water which accounts for 30% of the country’s land area. Driving into Malawi, we immediately notice a difference to the other African nations to the north - most houses are traditional mud and straw huts, and there are few large settlements. After passing through stunning, rugged scenery, we stop first at Chitimba, a campsite on the shores of Lake Malawi, before heading further south to Kande Beach, where [View Full Entry]

Mulanje Massif Africa » Malawi » Southern
Mulanje Massif I want to first apologize for taking a couple weeks between blog posts - I’ve been rather busy with work and have failed to get around to writing this post. However, I promise that it is worth the wait. A couple of weeks ago I visited a mountain in Malawi named Mulanje Massif, which rests in the Shire Valley in the southern region of the country. Anyone who has seen/read the Lord of the Rings should recognize the word ‘Shire’ (pronounced Sheer-ah here), and rightly so - Mulanje is where an author named J.R.R. Tolkein became inspired to write [View Full Entry]

Malawi  Africa » Malawi » Lake Malawi » Kandi Beach
On July 9th, we crossed the boarder into Malawi. This was very easy boarder crossing. The first city that we went to was Chitimba. The campsite was right on Lake Malawi, which is also known as the calendar lake, because it is 365 miles long and 52 miles across. I went for a 32km walk (about 20 miles round trip) up this mountain/hill to get to a town called Livingstone. I have to admit, I barely made it to the top! I need to introduce more cardio into my life: sad. Livingstone is just a small town that was developed in [View Full Entry]

Team Russia's Newest Recruit Today we are proud to announce the newest member of our team... This is Pops...and he's a monkey!! Pops was rescued, only a week old, on the side of the road in Salima, Malawi. He arrived at the Centre the day after Coco, very distressed, and he took to his bottle immediately. He is now quite a greedy little guy and calls for his bottle as soon as he thinks he might be starting to feel hungry! Pops is very independent and doesn't really like being cuddled, although he does not move too far away from his [View Full Entry]

Nkhotakota & Lake Malawi I've just got back from seeing Lake Malawi for the first time at the coastal trading center of Nkhotakota - and two things struck me instantly upon arriving. One - Lake Malawi is big. Two - Nkhotakota is truly a hidden gem. Sani Beach Resort A friend/co-worker and I last week decided that we were going to get out of Ntchisi and see some of the rest of the country - so the obvious first choice was to see the lake. If anyone looks at a map right now, the lake I'm referring to is the big [View Full Entry]

Moni!!! Muli bwanji?? (that’ll be ‘Hello! How are you’? in chechewa... ) Greetings from Monkey bay, Malawi! Hope you guys are all well, apologies to James for the length of the last blog, I’ll try to keep this one down to a lunch hour, snack size! So! It’s been a while again! I left you guys with the cliff-hanger of Zimbabwe... Fortunately, I lived to tell the tale, I’ll begin.... Saying goodbye to George and Naomi was a bit of a killer. I’d lived with them for pretty much every waking hour of that month. I felt a little empty waving [View Full Entry]

Sorry it has been a while. So, for an update. I went home as a surprise to everyone (except my dad) in May. It was great, and I really enjoyed going around confusing people. I even visited WV and NYC while in the states (apart from NC). It was great, and I ate A LOT. I was worried that when I returned to Malawi I wouldn't be able to adjust back, but it turned out that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I flew back into Lilongwe just in time to "rest" in the transit house [View Full Entry]

Gule Wamkulu Africa » Malawi » Central
Gule Wamkulu One - Happy Birthday Mom. Two - I've posted some new photos from a Gule Wamkulu dance that we were able to see yesterday. Gule Wamkulu is a secret society/cult in Malawi that shows how traditional life used to be, and is very entertaining to watch. (If you remember, a young child previously confused me for one of these dancers - you'll understand how fantastic that is by clicking the link below.) Instead of going on and on with words about the experience I think I'll let the photos give you a straight idea, and then maybe augment the [View Full Entry]
