Background: Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu BANDA the country held multiparty elections in 1994, under a provisional constitution, which came into full effect the following year. Current President Bingu wa MUTHARIKA, elected in May 2004 after the previous president failed to amend the constitution to permit another term, has struggled to assert his authority against his predecessor, who still leads their shared political party. MATHARIKA's anti-corruption efforts have led to several high-level arrests but no convictions. Increasing corruption, population growth, increasing pressure on agricultural lands, and HIV/AIDS pose major problems for the country.

My new home!
My new home!
My funky new traveling tent, next to the Warthog on the beach at Nkopola Lodge, helping folk fix cars, build boats and drink beer...
Best laid plans of mice and men... So after completing what will probably be my last offshore trip for a while, which was actually my most interesting to date, doing lots of flying and fixing lots of in-depth stuff that was very interesting. Getting out was another story entirely. Because Omar Bongo died, suddenly the Air Gabon route through Libreville was no longer safe.... the fact that quite a few of us had been flying Air Gabon (deemed safer than South African Airways or Ethiopian Airways by SS7 incidentally, despite it being an exceptionally ancient 2 aircraft fleet...) Hey Hey Hey!! Hope you guys are all well! It’s been a little while since I last checked in! I left you in Lilongwe, newlywed! I’ll pick up from there! Married life was great fun, We spent our ‘honeymoon’ eating pizza and ice cream at Mama Mia’s, an absolute gem of an Italian restaurant nestled away behind poinsettia trees in the sleepier districts of Lilongwe’s old town, so well hidden it took us two days to find it. At some point between pizza, powers spirit, hangovers and lazy days in the sun I spotted a poster looking for volunteers. Now, way [View Full Entry]

Malawi June 21 - June 26 Once we left Zanzibar we had some long drive days to get to the Malawi border. 500km on dirt tracks in a HGV unsurprisingly takes a fair few hours. To pass time on the truck we listened to iPods through the speakers (if I never hear Akon again it will be too soon) read, played ridiculous games like Mafia (don’t ask) and dozed. Now our original 12 had joined up with another group we were all expected to pitch in with cooking and cleaning duties. Cooking duty involves getting up at stupid o’clock to set [View Full Entry]

In 2006 the whole Jensen family made a trip to Malawi. Ed Crookshank had seen the great need to strengthen the many, many struggling bush congregations which are scattered throughout the country away from the large city of Lilongwe. He conceived of the plan to choose four remote locations as teaching hubs. Each was accessible to a number of congregations. Since teachers would do the traveling and the school was not confined to a fixed location, it was called the Mobile Bible School (MBS). We were honored to be the first teachers for this effort. Since the rainy season hampers travel [View Full Entry]

I barely got home from Camp GLOW before I had to come right back out of site for a "Strategic Planning" Conference in Blantyre. From Monday, August 17th through Friday August 21st we stayed at the Kabula Hill Lodge. I really loved the Lodge and all of the people running it. They were really sweet and very helpful. The Lodge is nice and well located in my opinion (not too far from the Peace Corps house either) and more affordable than the high-end hotels, but better than a hostel...Okay, so that was my small travel advice. NOW, I gained plenty of [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Firstly, massive apologies for not writing sooner. The internet here is hard to find and extremely temperamental so I've been sticking to email so far. I don't have much time here at all so this is just a very quick message to let you all know that I am well and having a blast. I'm writing to you from Lilongwe, capital of the poorest African country I am visiting on this trip. We have visited Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi so far. As I don't have any time I am going to direct you towards the Oasis website (www.oasisoverland.co.uk i [View Full Entry]

Hi Tana, Just trying to set up a travelblog so that I can keep up with my daily activities. I am sending you a short note with a picture so that I can send it on and you can let me know if you got it or not. We have had an extremely busy July but we enjoyed it so very much. Kiana and Katie went around the house, in and out and took pictures of everything. I thought that was funny. I am just going to include a picture of the house as a trial before I do the real [View Full Entry]

Day 15 - Chitimba (Malawi) - 13/8/09 Another early start, this time around 0600. Found my flip flops; they were left outside my tent. Climbed onto the great big green truck for now, the almost routine long drive though the African bush, was really looking forward to reaching another country, country number 3, Malawi. Again I fell asleep for a couple of hours, then when I was awoken by the sun beams burning my legs though the windows, finished reading my book, which I then swapped with Duncan. He was reading Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Down. It seemed, [View Full Entry]

Greetings again from Malawi! It has been such a blessing to have my oldest son Jacob with me on this trip. Since he has graduated from the Andrew Connally School of Preaching, he is really developing his teaching ability. He and I are both teaching for the Mobil Bible School while we are here (hope to give you another blog later detailing this work). But Jacob has been asked to do other teaching also. On Saturdays Jacob has been teaching a group of young men and women. Lina Crookshank realized that the youth of the church here really receive no attention [View Full Entry]

Learning to "count the cost"

Greetings from Malawi! I want to share with our readers the wonderful news of one indigenous congregation. What do we mean by indigenous? In the botanical realm, we understand that a banana tree grows well in a tropical climate and can produce fruit. We thus speak of certain plants being indigenous to a particular region. In his fine booklet on “Practical Principles of World Evangelism” brother Rod Rutherford explains how the term can be applied to local congregations. He highlights that an indigenous congregation must be self-supporting, self-governing, and self-propagating [View Full Entry]
