We left Kisumu on the Coast Bus at 5 PM and travelled all night to Mombasa - only 1550 KSH and the bus was clean and comfortable, with lots of leg room. The seats even recline. The stretch from Kisumu to Nakuru covered some very rough road, but the coach's good suspension was good and we relaxed. We weren't prepared for the many stops for police checks at barriers on the road. At one point, the police appeared, with assault rifles, and ordered everyone off the bus, men first. They frisked the men and searched their bags, then had the women get off. A female passenger was delegated the task of pat searching all the women. After this, the police boarded the bus and searched each seat with flashlights. I didn't know why such a secure ... read more

Stay tuned! mousour sana ..... read more

We were assured that our bus from Dar' would not only leave on time, but would take 8 hours to reach Mombasa, Kenya, the sixth country of our safari kubwa. Of course this was promised before Africa time was taken into account and after leaving only a modest hour late, we arrived in Mombasa at approximately 10pm, making it yet another 14 hour travel day. If only we didn't have to stop every 10 minutes for the driver to buy fruit or for every second passenger to load on and off their lifes possesions, or even for a border official to turn up at the border, we might have made better time. From our guidebook we chose The New People Hotel above lodgings with names such as Glory Guest House, Excellent Hotel and Evening Guest House ... read more

Can't believe it's been a week.... what a busy week it's been. I'm now in Malindi. It's a city up the coast about 2 hours from Mombasa. We drove up on Fri. It was really neat to get to see some of the countryside along the way. What a difference from the city. There were mud huts along the side of the road. And the further from the city we got the more women we saw carrying loads on their heads and more villages with mud (or manuer walls) with thatched roofs. Just a little before we got to Malindi we stopped in Gede. It's a little town that has a national historical preserve. One of the oldest swahili settlements was there. We got a tour of the ruins by the guy that runs the park. ... read more
