Had a great last day of training today before heading back to Accra, we completed an accident investigation, Myself, Gideon and Edmond built a fake Accident where all of the Safety Reps had to investigate it, Gideon was the evil manager which was fum for him as it was completely out of character for him, the guys all enjoyed themselves.
At the end of the training the team were all keen to have their photo taken with me - training in Africa is a bit like going to a wedding, holding that permanent smile at cameras for absolutely ages 😊
Edmond took Gideon and I into the main site to see the pits - they are HUGE I couldnt see any gold but apparently thats normal, the gold needs to be processed before it comes out so I wont be bringing any samples home. Sadly to build the mines many villages and farms were "relocated" the Villagers and farmers had new houses built and many were offered and given jobs at the plant which was great news for them all. they even get complaints from near villages that they want the same compensation too.
while driving around the
pits we saw a man exit his dumper truck cab and take a pee over the edge (nice) of course I said "thats lucky for the men but what about the ladies?" as they have many women who drive the dumper trucks, apparently the women say over the radio "I need to go to the bush" and then they get collected
There are pythons that are also resident here, eeeek, I havent seen one yet - the rule is if you do see one you must let it pass - one was killed last week - ooops
After dinner tonight we came out of the mess hall and it was raining (damn all you lot in England for talking about BBQs) we waited for a while but it just got heavier, and my god you have never seen rain until you have seen rain in Ghana, Gideon and I decided to head back to our rooms, I was wearing flipflops so I said I couldnt run so I told him to go ahead but being a gentleman he wanted to ensure I got back safely. We got back to his room and I told him "go in
I am fine from here on" at this point already soaked to the bone and had lost my shoes several times, I walked further down the path listening to the thunder with the lightening lighting the sky up and saw that the rest of the path was now flooded, I started to wade through thinking about the Pythons and wondering what the chances were of a crocodile taking a walk around these parts.
but as you can tell I made it back Safely and I am listening to the wind and rain bashing hell out of my room wondering if I should put my suitcase on the table tonight just incase my room floods!
goodnight all - I am heading back to Accra tommorow on an 8 hour car journey!
