My Room
Bed Area Ahlan!
Since so much has happened in the past couple of days I have been unable to blog my experiences thus far. Now, with six days until classes begin, I will attempt to take you through the first couple days of my stay in Egypt. Hope you enjoy!
I arrived in Egypt on Wednesday afternoon around noon. I had a ten hour direct flight from JFK, which was nice since I slept most of the way. I had just spent less than 24 hrs at my house since I had arrived from my three week journey in Spain through Magis/WYD on Monday EST. Nevertheless, somehow I managed to unpack from that trip and pack for Egypt for a year in approximately two hours, and I barely forgot anything (thanks mom)! I didn't really mind the hectic running around since I love flying and traveling. Of course, as I am on my way to JFK the East Coast gets an earthquake, thankfully my flight was not delayed! So, as I arrive in Egypt, get my visa at the airport, and meet the AUC driver at the gate, I am off to my new home for a year, The American University
My Room
Closet Space in Cairo!
AUC New Cairo's campus is three years old, and it is gorgeous (pictures will be in another blog post). I am greeted by fountains and palm trees ....and security guards. In order to get onto the campus you have to put any bags you have through a scanner, show your id, and pass through a metal detector, every. single. time. I hope my fellow Americans don't take it for granted when you can just walk onto your campus and head to where you need to go! After I made it through security, I got picked up by a golf cart which took me and my luggage to my new dorm room. The driver literally drops me off in the middle of the walkway and peaces out. So, as I finally find the women's dorms (male and female are separate and you can only meet in a common area, no exceptions!) the lady at the desks asks me if I need anything. Well, as a matter of fact...
Finally, after getting a master key to my room, I find I have to haul all my luggage up the flights of stairs (no elevators) and go into my
My Room
Shelf Area room. The rooms are very spacious set up with two bunk beds (one for me and one for my roommate) with a huge desk underneath. There are also big closets and a shelf, and a floor bathroom (two showers, two bathrooms) for 6 girls, which really isn't that bad. My roommate had already moved in since I arrived at orientation late because of my previous trip, so I started unpacking a few things and headed downstairs. After finding the orientation center, I was taken around to get my id, visa requirements for studying, and a small tour. After, I met my roommate Karalynn from Texas (she is very nice) I continued to unpack. I went to bed pretty earlyish (around 10) because I was tired but needed to get used to the six hour time difference. All in All, a very successful first day!
