I headed to Kamakura as my last stop in Japan for this trip. I had earlier planned to visit Hokkaido, but April is not a great time to go, the winter hasn't fully ended nor is it there, so not the best time. I hope to cover it in another trip. Kamakura is in the Kanagawa prefecture in the Honshu island, a seaside city close to Tokyo. I stayed at Fujisawa, about 30 minutes by train from Kamakura and rested the first day after a long journey from Takayama. Next day, I visited Kamakura and my first stop was the Kotoku-in temple, to see the Daibutsu (Giant Buddha). This Buddha sits in the Amitabha posture, weighs 120 tonnes (made of Bronze) and is 13.5 meters tall. You feel dwarved by the Buddha, but also know that ... read more

Sometimes when travelling, things don't go precisely as planned and that was one of those days. Plan was to catch the 10am express bus to Gotemba Premium Outlets (but not stay) and connect to a local bus to our next Ryokan, but it turned out that it is a very popular bus and you needed to book a ticket and it was sold out. This meant we had to catch the local bus to another stop and change again. So three separate buses. This meant a much longer journey and arriving over two hours later than planned around 14:15. In hindsight, I should have stayed in Kawaguchiko and kept the car for 2 days and have a day trip to Hakone from there, but then we wouldn't have had a wonderful stay at our next ryokan. ... read more

The Japanese culture values hard work and social harmony. As modern as this country has become, they seem to continue to practice their traditional values and spiritual beliefs. It is refreshing to visit Japan because the people are polite and respect their elders. This was demonstrated a couple of times when younger people offered us a seat on the train. Yes, it made us feel older, but the kindness and respect were evident. There is also great reverence for the past and many Japanese value this greatly as evidenced by the shrines and embracing traditional clothing. All this is evidenced in our travels..... On a bright, sunny, warm morning the Silver Muse docked in the sprawling port of Yokohama. The first sight we saw was the Ramen Museum. Being great fans of that noodle dish, we felt right at home. Our disembarkation was a smooth process and before we knew it we were fiddling with the money exchange machine and searching out a taxi to take us to our rental house in the seaside town of Hayama. It is important to have a handful of Japanese Yen since credit cards aren't so widely accepted outside of the major cities. The ride down to Hayama was quite scenic and uneventful. I had printed out the address of our rental in both English and kanji (Japanese writing) to help the driver. However once we arrived in Hayama he had a very ... read more

After a long hiatus from hosting due to the pandemic of the past several years, we are back on the high seas again and loving it. A lot of water has passed under the bridge in those intervening years. Zoom calls became a way of life for keeping in touch with friends and relatives. It was the longest stretch of time since we have been married that we have not traveled somewhere in the world. During the quarantine we got to know our new home in Florida and were grateful for the comforts it offered like a swimming pool, hot tub, ping pong table and a lovely lanai overlooking our lake and 160 acre nature preserve. But travel is definitely in our blood and by 2023 it was time for us to hit the road. In ... read more

Having learnt our lesson after the trip from Tokyo, Scott took Elodie to the playground to run off some energy while I packed up our AirBNB in Osaka. By the time they came back I was all done so we grabbed our suitcases and headed to the train station. When we arrived at Osaka station we purchased shinkansen tickets to Hakone. We opted to take a slightly later train so we'd have a direct trip. While waiting for the train it became clear that the morning playground trip had been a little too successful as Elodie fell asleep in her pram. We had about an hour and a half wait for our train, so Elodie was awake by the time we were due to board. We were a little worried about how she'd cope being awake ... read more

Fri: Lake Biwa to Gora Good morning, 5 am ☀️ The sun was just rising and the east side was turning orange. Breakfast was done before 6 am. It was a good time to take a stroll along the lake which we hadn’t been able to take advantage of yet. We had been seeing a lot of people walking and jogging the lakeside path from our 19th-floor room. Y wasn’t onboard but he was happy to walk on rocks at Nagisa Park. We took the first shuttle to Otsu at 8:15 am. This got us to Kyoto station before 9 am. The plan was to get Mister Donuts for the Shinkansen ride. This was quickly denied as they weren’t opening until 10 am today due to some equipment swaps (?), doh! Our train was leaving at ... read more

Thursday 13thApril 2023 KOCHI 10.00am – 15.30pm At last ….an easy day as we weren’t docking until 10.00am and we had decided to just do Kochi Castle! Mmmm…well, after stopping for our precious free 10 minute internet in the Port we bumped into Angela and decided to share a taxi with her to Mt Godai which is just a viewing point and then drop her at the Botanical Garden before we took the same taxi to Kochi Castle. Best laid plans and all that!! We ended up at the temple Chikurinji!! A quick run around, up to the Pagoda ( to check that there wasn’t a viewpoint!!) – it was oh so very pretty, with green trees and orange azalea trees and old steps and wooden gates, temples and the obligatory cherry trees! Dropped Angela off ... read more
