The mighty cargo carrier landed at YWG (Winnipeg) The Sunglasses Reunion.
Experience + Emotion = Memory…
There was snow on the ground, windy and blowing. The plane was delayed due to arctic weather conditions. It wasn’t a huge delay but it nevertheless inconvenienced things. It gave me three hours in the city instead of twelve or so, getting a few small tasks done was priority upon my arrival in Winnipeg.
Check-in happened – then I cleared security and immigrations then made my way to the YWG departure lounge and waited…
Then I
boarded for Toronto… Then to Houston… Then to Buenos Aires…
I overnighted in BA then flew to Ushuaia.
And so I flew to the southern part the planet again. I am not a huge fan of long-haul overnight flights, nor am I generally a fan of airports. It seems as if I spend a lot of my life in airports – I should find a way to enjoy them more… Any suggestions?
Flying is like a Rubik’s Cube, there are many ways to solve it. The internal workings of the cube and the external workings that challenge us as we wander in a dreamy state between dull grey terminals... I

BA reaches for the sky thought of Einstein’s light-speed theory. Light-speed versus flight-speed… Flight-speed is slower but it seems that time slows down on longer flights and strange things happen. For instance, taking off in winter and landing in summer. It is time travel – I had to adjust my watch and acclimatise to a warmer climate…
Flying is like a journey towards, complications, surprises and delights that create emotions.
The Stages of Travel…
1) Planning – ideas, research, lapse in consideration, reconsideration, book flights.
2) Departure – go to airport, check in.
3) Travel - embark, fly, disembark (repeat)
4) Arrival – Taxi to hotel.
5) Vacation – have fun and explore (or work)
6) End vacation – steps 2 – 4.
7) Reflection…
I was happy to arrive in Ushuaia and board the M/V Ocean Endeavour for some adventures on the southern seas. I have had a little time for reflection and to be with my Antarctic companions again, the albatrosses and the penguins, the seals and the whales. I enjoyed my personal challenge of taking only one photograph for the entire ten day voyage – I picked the Gerlache area to bring
out my camera hoping to catch a single moment of a memory… I didn’t take a picture of the emperor penguin, standing alone on the ice nor did I snap away at the pod of killer whales. I chose ice – the essence of the continent…
I also enjoyed reuniting my colleague with his sunglasses.
The back story… I was driving an ATV along the remote shores of Somerset Island in the Canadian Arctic earlier this summer when I found a pair of sunglasses by the side of the trail. They were really nice and I thought I’d keep them. I told my co-worker of this.
“They look like Dave Merron’s he lost them out there last year.” He said.
So I kept them safe until Dave and I happenstance upon each other once more…
I reunited Dave with his sunglasses on the other side of the planet, 18 months after he lost them.
It was sunny – he needed them…
Hello Antarctica…
If you’ve been here before, there’s no need for an explanation, if you haven’t been, no explanation is possible…
Dave.

The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
While I was working in Antarctica our theme song was from Timbuk3....The future's so bright I've gotta wear shades. Loved it. So this blog brought back pleasant memories. One of my friends lost an expensive bracelet. I was out cross country skiing and found it. What is wrong with you? You are a world traveler and you need to get your mind right about the travel thing. Seriously! We love, love, love hanging out in airports, people watching, reading, writing blogs, wandering. Our jobs are tough and we are tied to phones and beepers so when we are in an airport we don't have to deal with any of that . Guess our perspective is different. Airport = new adventure. Get your mind right my friend. Don't fight it.
