Sunset in Croatia
From the town of Bol which is on the island of Brac I'm not sure where to start for this Blog it's been to long since my last one. I think I left you in Florence which now feels like forever ago. From Florence we travelled down to Rome and spent three days there soaking up the sights of the Vatican city and the Colosium. From there we visited Naples and Pompie then caught a ferry to Greece. Spent about 10 days island hoping and enjoying the island life then headed from Athens up to Albaina. All the Albainian's we meet were so friendly and welcoming and gave us great advice on were to travell next. So it was off to an old pirate town in Montenigro called Ulcini. From there we travelled up the coast to Croatia and visited Dubrovnick which is one of the most picturesq towns I had seen so far. I was a good little tourist and walked the town walls and engoyed the view. From Dubrovnick we headed in land to Mostar and Sarajevo. Both these cities still show traces from the war in the early 90's and were unique for me in the fact that around the corner from the roman Catholic Cathrdral you can see the
Croatia
The beach I found on my bike Serbian Orthodox church, then around the corner from that is the Emperors Mosque, and the Jewish Synogog. So many religions living so close together.
After a quick trip to Belgrade we headed back to the beaches of Croatia. The highlight for me was borowing Kewans Snorkel and Mask, hiring a bike and biking around the Island of Brac untill I found a deserted little beach. I snorkled to my hearts content😊 After Crotia we headed to Slovenia and a 25km cave system near Postojina. I was duley impresed with the Stalictights and mights. Then we headed to the Capital Ljubljana and I had a wonderful morning wondering the streets and people watching (everyone was out for a saturday morning coffee and shop). After some hiking in the triglavski National Park (near Bled) we moved on to Auatria. We drove through the Hohe Tauern national Park and I have to say that it is in my top five for beautiful streches of road. We stopped in St Johann for the night and bumped into a convoy of Five other vans so headed to Munich early with them.
The Octoberfest was fantastic! I had such a great time singing, a
Caves in Postojina
They called these formations curtains eating and drinking and dancing on chairs. We only lasted three days of the actuall beerfest then high tailed it to Salzberg for and early night and a bit of a detox. Salzburg was beautiful but the van decided to break down just as we were keaving so we didn't get to see the Ice caves that are near by. Once the van was up and running again (thankfully not so expensive to fix) it was off to Vnice. I had a small goal for my time in Venice and that was to drink a good coffee from a cute cafe. It was mission accomplished when I had had enough of church seeing and city gasing I found a small out of the way cafe and wine shop and sat and had my coffee in a window seat. It was great!
Hungary and budapest was next, great city again but I'm feeling that I'm losing your attention?
Through out this trip I have been continuosly amazed by the people and cities that have picked themselves up after being destroyed by war. I felt this the most in Poland. My trip to Auschwitz moved me to tears but the
museum presentes it so we can learn and remember what happened not dwell on it. My bike tour in Krakow showed just how small the Getto was, from memory about 70 000 jews were forced to live there. this area now has a vibrant cafe scene. I couldn't get enough information about the 1944 uprising in Warsaw and the thought that 80% of the city was completly flattend is astounding and heart breaking.
Berlin was all about the Wall, seeing were it had run through the city and hearing and reading stories about what it was like living either side. It was very interesting. I also went to a Rembrant exhibition which I throughly enjoyed. His paintings were fantastic!
It was a slight break from war when we went through Prague. It felt to me that this city is an artist paradise. I wanted to become an artist and stay. Unfortunatly my 'art' now days is in the form of stick figures so I just bought a small print instead😊
