Since writing last I’ve encountered the playing bus driver on my trips around town. No Duke Ellington these times. First day it was “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” duet by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond; and the second day was Shania Twain. Neither song seemed to fit the personality of the driver.
I stopped in the Anglican Cathedral that is just up the street. I only mention this because architecturally it is an example of how in modern times money is the key ingredient to completing a project whereas 800 years ago when building a cathedral the most important factor was time. The cathedral here in Auckland is made up of two very different styles sewn together at the transept. The original part of the cathedral was started 60 or 70 years ago, in a modern interpretation of a typical gothic cathedra including the transept, chancel, ambulatory and apsidal chapels. Money ran out and work stopped. When finances were in order 30 or so years ago the original plan was tossed out the stained glass window. Where one would typically find the nave and side aisles a modern wood framed box has been dropped in (you might call in Big
Box Religion). Seemingly no contextual relationship between the old and the new. It’s like the nave fell down and instead of replacing it the decided to go tack on a temporary (less expensive) fix.
Finally found (and mailed) a piece of modern Auckland art work someone from back in the states asked me to locate. Sorry that it took so long it’s a very popular item (should be there any day now, let me know if you don’t receive).
Went over to Marcos and Jen’s place to discuss our south island trek. We’ve got a full schedule lined up for use, I’m looking forward to it.
I hate soccer, I just hate it. Very early Sunday before last I was watching ESPN college football. I was excited when they announced that they would be on at the same time this past Sunday broadcasting the Michigan vs. Michigan St. game, I planned my whole Saturday night Sunday morning around the game. I was up at 4:30 to watch the game and found that the whole day had been preempted by a large soccer competition. I was so mad, I didn’t want to watch soccer. While there is plenty
of rugby to watch it’s just not as exciting as college football.
Work is keeping me interested and busy. I’ve been pricing up ten different options for a new pedestrian bridge (over a small but busy harbor) and site improvements to a public trails system along the waterfront. Earlier this week I went out and performed an Audit of six new warehouses at various stages of completeness.
Trying to determine what I will do with my three day weekend coming up. Anyone want to see photos from a particular area in the north island? Let me know I’ll see what I can do.
PS: I did a dreadful job packing for this trip. To many shorts and short sleeve shirts. Still not warm enough to go out everyday with shorts. Boy, did I call that one wrong.
Cheers from the north island. Go Tigers and Card’s, too bad about Cory Lidle!
