We arrived to Europe away from Europe today. Montreal is actually the perfect blend of American and European culture. On top of that everyone speaks french so it makes it even more "exotic"! The first thing we explored was part of the underground city. You can basically live underground if need be. Everything you would want from malls, to banks to flower shops to transportation can be found underground. Most of the modern part of Montreal's downtown can be walked underground. This is of course due to the frigid winters they have. The work it must have taken to make this happen must have been a daunting task. Our first night there, we had an excellent meal in the old city which was extremely well preserved and then had a drink at a hip bar close by. We then walked all the way to our hotel...you guessed it... underground. Our 2nd day we visited the huge St Joseph Cathedral and the Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal. Both were amazing in their architecture and preservation. We also made the requisite stop at the olympic park and the biodome which was an exemplary project in recycling a velodrome (bicycle track) into a biodome complete with rainforests, aquariums and the cold canadian forests.
