9/24/06 (Sunday) Donavin’s Been Nuked (Like a Poodle in a Microwave)

It was a bit ironic the day after watching Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” I found myself directly below the largest hole in the ozone layer (the film was about global warming so in fact a very different but related topic). New Zealand was exposed to UV rays 25% stronger than a typical day. In the grand scheme of things I was like the ant at the business end of a magnifying glass, the light and radiation was so intense. I could feel the heat from the sun cooking me from under my skin (if I was to be asked how deep the burning sensation was I would have to say it was ¼” under my epidermal). If the urban legend about the wet poodle in a microwave is true, I can truly empathize with the creature, it felt as if I was being cooked from the inside out.

Yes mom (and anyone else screaming at me about skin cancer), I did put some sun screen on (SPF 45)! I also donned a baseball cap (and you know how much I dislike wearing those) along with trousers (good English word) and a white shirt.

In the morning we walked around One Tree Hill (see the photos from yesterday). Tried to stay in the shade and enjoyed a nice ice cream at the park. It was while at the park that I received some text messages from a friend traveling in the south island. I have it on good authority from the source that the factory tour of Cadbury Chocolate factory is a bad deal. Very low quality samples and the tour consist of a very short video that obviously must be filmed in such a way to protect the company’s trade secrets.

After the walk in the park I parted ways with the group and headed by foot (5km) back to Parnell. My walk took me through some very nice neighborhoods and parks. I’ve included the photos of some of the typical homes you see in Parnell and surrounding communities.

Despite my best efforts I did come back home a shade or two darker, no burns though and that’s a good thing, I just hate the peeling skin look.

I’ll sign out with a quote from my hero Kramer in the “Butter Shave” episode

“Stick a fork in me Jerry, I'm done.”

I like this plant matter for a wall cover.

The wall maintains its plainer surface yet addes a soft appearance. The plant matter was less than an inch deep and I saw no signs of pruning. Anyone know what this is?

It looks like spring is well along
Son, it is so beautiful there. I love all the spring blooms in the flowering trees. How strange to see palm like trees interspersed. I liked that live wall also. I have no idea what the plant is though. Go back and take a closer and direct shot of it.
