San Carlos
The scenery... Hola de todos! Tess and I just had a relaxing week at the beach in San Carlos. It was just what we were looking for--a small, quiet beach town. We got to do a lot of stretching, swiming, soaking up sun. Every day was beautiful, while down south, in Mazatlan and Chihuahua, they were getting pounded by rain and flooded. Not a hint of that. But tonight we take the sleepless ride down to Mazatlan, dodging hurricains, because there are suppossed to be quite a few more coming! We saw on the news the footage of flooding in some of the towns--man it's awful. While all that was happening, we were chillin on the beach.
Renting a place for a week was a super success. Our place was so nice, and we had two rooms, with a kitchen and everything. We only ate one meal out all week, and we cooked delicious mexican meals. What I realized is, I already eat a lot of mexican food in the states, but I prepare it myself. But when we prepared it here, it was even more authentic, and I thought somewhat better than many of the places we ate out. We had
Heaven
This is where you go if you die and go to heaven. It´s hot though. all the fixings--guac, sour cream, salsa, cheese, beans, everything you could want but meat. And the ingredients were more authentically mexican, so the food was too. It was yummy! But now we are in transit, so we'll be eating out again. That's fun sometimes too, but we saved a lot making it ourselves...
Here is Tess's blog so you can see that too__

hers is awesome, and she recounts some great adventures.
We got some great pictures. We rented a kayak for 2 days and just went crazy, paddling on the Gulf of California. There are crazy arches you can paddle through, but we didn't attempt any. It was a bit risky, for the water would flood, go up about 5 feet, then down to the rocks. When the water was lowest, there was about 2 feet of clearance between the rocks, so timing was key. But we worried we would flip, so we just watched. We did go into some caves, and had a nice picnic on a beach you can only get to by boad. We took a few swims there--the water is an amazing blue green.
Often in the morning we
Sweet Kayaking
Had an awesome time kayakin would go down to the beach below our hotel and go swimming. I think I mentioned how we saw dolphins close by. Well, a few days later we went swimming again. We were out a hundred feet or so, and all around were pelicans. And these other birds that soar around, then dive straight down into the water, ambushing fish! I love watching those.
So we're surrounded by giant pelicans and we see the dolphins again! This time even closer. We were swimming with them! Tess got tired and started swimming in, and I swam out a bit farther. One jumped right near me! It was so nice...
The second day we kayaked, we went out to honeymoon island--it's one we saw the first day we got to San Carlos, and we tried to swim to it, but it is pretty far. Finally we made it, just yesterday. It was incredible. This is an island where birdlife thrives. Pelicans lined the cliff shore, which jutted out. But at the tip of the island is a nice beach, and that's where we hung out. We did some swimming, and went right out with the pelicans, who would soar around,
Relax
Sunset on the gulf of cali then dive down, sticking their bills into the water and snagging fish. As soon as the came up, these small brown gulls would peck at their beaks, trying to snatch some fish. It was great.
Any other adventures or thoughts? Hmm...
I guess we'll need to sit down again and write what lessons we learned this week. We did that last week and it was great, we've learned a lot.
Much love to everyone! I'll let this sit a bit and see what else comes to me.
Oh yeah, real quick, I decided to get a guitar. I haven't yet, but I think it will be really nice. I want to do some learning musically, so I need to. It's a catch 22, because I'm travelling so light and dont want to deal with it, but I think it will be worth the hassle. And I don't doubt I'll play it just about all the time. Still haven't met a piano out here, so it may be necessary to get a guitar...also, I can serenade the people, and hopefully make some friends that way. As for the idea of playing in restaurants and such, that is
Beauty
sun sets over tetakawi tough business, and kind of feels like hassling people. I should tell about the guy who did for us--
We were eating some tacos. He came up and said, you like a song? Tess didn't, but I was like, sure. He played some, and I told him to play Besame Mucho. But he said Besale Mucho, like kiss her, and it kinda ruined the song. Plus he didn't really know the words and sang badly. He finished finally, and said, Four dollars. I looked at him incredulously. It seemed like a good joke. He said it again. Tess and I reached into our pockets to see what we could muster up, with no intentions of giving him near 4 dollars. We managed to get together 1.40 pesos, which is about 14 cents. Sorry we told him. He laughed at first like he couldn't believe it, then he left finally. We just kept saying Lo siento. It was a bit awkward, but kinda funny. It's another instance of the rule, ask how much.
so here we are sitting in the same internet cafe as we did last time. Making our way down south,
who knows what awaits us.
The
Honeymoon island
tess and I kayaked here, a nice island. sun shines bright every day, no way to get away
except to hang out in the shade, have a siesta...go for a swim in the cool drink.
We are off to more long bus rides, overnight, and through floods,
off to mazatlan where we may find surf, and catch some waves
off, going south, always south till the very end
to strange lands I know nothing about.
That is where the most discovery is done.
You know I was thinking, we can't always make everyone else happy with us,
or fulfill their expectations or desires for ourselves, but there is no reason we shouldn't be everything WE wish ourselves to be.
Well here I am, this is life.
You have to try to find yourself, lost somewhere in the world.
People here have business ventures of such small scale,
taco stands and selling mexican flags,
and their markets are so limited.
I think of america and the opportunity I have there,
the markets, the money, the business,
and I don't know why but it makes me want to go to business school and get a job and make a lot of money.
Just forget about the
lack of opportunity here, the hard life.
But I suppose that doesn't solve anything.
who knows what I'll do when and if I get back. This trip has no return home plans!
And after this I only plan on VISITING the states.
Peace out!

Business School?
You alive man, your last note was over a week ago. Nice to see that Mexico has shown you the reality that vacationing in afluent European villages. Makin money can be a very nice thing. You should try it once you get all the wandering out of your system. I just got a good job, that allows me to go into desolate places for a week, maybe a week and a half at a time, then take a week or two off, and get paid for my week or two off!! Technicaly i'm on standby when i'm not working, so i could get called up, but usually i get 9 days off, and a week or so on. Pretty sweet I think, staring at about 30K and going up shortly after i have learned the geology stuff that i don't know with my chemistry background. Anyway, i'll probably do that for a year or so, save up money, then take a vacation like you. Then, on to business school, i think. See you there.
