While I managed to write nearly every day after hiking an average of 10+ miles, I couldn't find the time once I left the countryside trails for the world of sightseeing in a city.

I was happy that at least there was the transition of two days in the the much smaller city of York before arriving in London for an additional two days. York is a walled, medieval city that is best known for having one of the oldest and largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe (York Minster). We did a free walking tour of the city on our one full day and some of us went to the Evensong service at the Minster. We heard wonderful music from a visiting choir....amazing acoustics!

The guide told us an interesting story about why the York Minster is one of the few, large cathedrals in England to not sustain any damage from bombing by the Nazis. The Nazis had targeted churches and other historic landmarks for bombings. However, the York Minster was located such that it was a landmark for bombers to make a turn to head to the industrial areas to bomb, so it was spared.

After two nights and one full day in York, it was off to London for three of our group. (One had left as soon as we finished our walk and flown out of Edinburgh and the other went straight to Heathrow from York.) We had two nights and one full day in London, and since we had all been to London before, none of us needed to do all the main attractions. We all went to Leicester Square and got half price tickets to the show "Memphis" and then I headed off to walk across bridges (something I love to do in any city I visit) and then meet up with a friend who was visiting her daughter and her new grandchild, who live just outside of London. I had a lovely visit with my friend, her daughter and her adorable 3 month old in a cafe on Piccadilly Street.

We all loved "Memphis".....the lead female is well known in UK as a singer. We were all wondering if the performers were American (they didn't give programs out) but it turns out that the leads were all British performers. I'm always thinking about shows where American actors have to use British accents for sh
