San Diego to LA to Amsterdam to Madrid to Vigo to the Hotel Mexico. 35 hours of nonstop travel. BUT, I am in a carry on suitcase, so my bag also arrived safely. A few glasses of vino tinto (red) and a ham and cheese tortilla (which is really an omelette) and I fell into bed for a good 7 hours of very necessary sleep. This morning, I woke up and took the very necessary shower and then went off to find coffee. I love how all coffee in Europe is really espresso served in real cup and a lovely little pastry or chocolate is served right along. So civilized. We wandered around Vigo for a few hours and then hopped the bus to A Guarda - about an hour or so away. We rode through very pretty countryside with lots of small vineyards in nearly every back yard. Portugal is right across the river and Will pointed out the mountain we will hike in the morning for a spectacular view. A Guarda is very sweet and not as tiny as expected with a few main streets, lots of shops, and 3 or 4 grocery markets and beautifully decorated for Christmas. We took the 5 minute walk to the port and wandered back through the town past a few lovely pastry shops and the old church that doesn't seem to have a name. Maybe more research is necessary. We also walked to his school even though it's shut tight for the holiday. Lucky Will has a half blcok commute! Later, perhaps 9 pm or so, we will have something yummy like tapas and sangria for dinner. Overall, this region of Galicia is gorgeous and my son has very good Spanish skills (and improving Gallegos skills - this region is so close to Portugal that the language is a mix of Portuguese and Spanish) so I'm feeling very happy and comfortable right now. Tomorrow - the hike!
