Hi friendzz,

Who ever thought I would ever come to a third world country? Yeah I didn't. Well I want to keep everyone updated on this amazing trip I have been blessed with. Okay so yesterday started off with a 6:20am flight to Port-au-Prince from JFK. So the early wake up call had me extremely nervous as I went to bed that night. The flight was an easy 3 and a half hours and then I had finally arrived. Standing through customs for an hour when I got off the flight wasn't what I expected and losing one of my bags definitely wasn't in the plan either. I had tears running down my face when the bag incident happened by the way (classic Sarah move). Besides those two rough patches I had finally started my 5 week journey. In Haiti people do drive on the right side of the street just like in the states but it is more congested. The place I'm staying known as HAC is located about 25 minutes from the airport on a good day. We passed a couple cows and road on a little dirt road to get to our destination. The building is not finished after rebuilding from the hurricane but it does the job. The interns live upstairs and downstairs there is a school and a kitchen. My bed is a tiny twin size bunk bed covered by a mosquito net. I have 2 other roommates, Brittany and Valerie. We do have filtered water but unfortunately we don't have hot water. So that's a little overview of the living conditions and I'm sure I'll add some more details as I go along.

Day 1: First thing I did was take my first nap in Haiti (of course). It was hot and I was sweating. The average temperature each day is in the 90s and we don't have AC. I have not slept with a blanket once. After my quick power nap we toured the small community around HAC. We met a sweet girl named Margery who took us on a 2 hour walk with her cousins. Believe me it was even hotter as the sun started to set but the scenery and the mountains nearby is absolutely incredible. Dinner was rice covered in goat and spinach (I know sounds really gross, actually really good). I have a feeling rice is going to be a top food dish. Power went out shorty after that and we used the generator to create light so all of the interns could sit down talk. By 10:00pm we were all ready for bed and I repeatedly sprayed myself down with bug repellent in hopes I wouldn't wake up covered in mosquito bites. The winds have been around 15-25mph so there is a tree blowing into the tin roof which kept me up for a little while before I was able to go to sleep. I was awoken at 5:30am by a rooster outside our open window that would not stop making noise, so I put my iPod in to help me get back to sleep.

I don't have much else to tell as of now but expect me to keep you updated more as the days go on!

Xo,
