Day 12 - Salzburg

Had breakfast in the Schloss main dining room, which is actually the ballroom and after that we wandered the castle and gardens for a while, still raining and very cold but never mind we made our way into the old town for a look around, not much really to the town, very expensive but the main feature is the Fortress Hohensalzburg. We decided against the 900m walk and chose the funicular or cable car in our terms for the trip to the top. The fortress is massive and covers around 5-6 acres and the keep and tower is a further 4 levels higher than the main castle. The fortress history dates back possible to 180ad where there was possibly a small church on the top of the hill however the first real evidence dates to around 1076 where in the current chapel you can see the original foundations and crypt of the old structure, there was much building from 1200 through until 1600 when building then stopped and it remains the same today. This reputed to be the largest and best preserved castle/fortress in the world. Leaving the fortress we went back down to town and found Mozart’s house, bit of a let-down really but there you go. We then went back to the car to drive to the Mirabelle Gardens where a scene from the 'Sound of Music' was filmed. After we walked up the steps a group of young people arrived and stood on the steps and burst into the song 'Do - Re - Mi', was very cool and they could really sing. We the day is now waning and we have walked close to 10k today so a little foot sore we went back to the hotel for a rest before dinner again at our little Trattoria.
