The Nullarbor Plains were much prettier than expected, green and lush thanks to recent rains. The drive up to Kalgoorlie-Boulder was also nice and green. Didn't realize this area was a eucalyptus forest area. Beautiful bronze barked trees and plenty of wattle everywhere. Large shallow salt lakes along the way as well. Kalgoorlie is much like Mt Isa in that it runs along beside the mine. Lots of beautiful old pubs and government buildings. Easy viewing of the super pit from the lookout and from the museum. Yesterday we took a drive north to Menzies along a very good tarred road. Menzies is just a small town with sculptures around the streets, a lovely sandstone courthouse and a very well decorated servo. It is covered in number plates and adds. From there we drove north on a very good gravel road to Lake Ballard to see the sculptures on the lake. Amazing. It is a large shallow lake with stick figure statues dotted here and there. You can walk out to most of them, however, the salt crust gives way to slippery red mud. Well worth the drive.
