View from Dale End Farm
Returned from a week in the Lake District at Dale End Farm again with extended family on Leigh's side. Stanley and Nina and Sallie and Avi didn't come because of personal reasons and the troubles in Israel with Lebanon. Dale End residents consisted of Leigh and me, Judy and new partner Brian, Leslie, Varda and Doron who hosted this year, Judy's son Ian and girlfriend Clare, other son Alan and Dori our labradoodle. Ruth and Paul Brass were staying in a hotel in Grasmere and John Clark, new partner Alison and 6 year old daughter Sam plus John's sister Linda and husband Ian were staying at Lea Cottage down the road which is brand new and very nice inside.

Leslie, Varda and I did a short walk the first evening, but then we all did a modest 5 mile walk on Sunday to the Three Shires in Langdale. Went through an interesting slate quarry where unfortunately the samples were too heavy for me to take home. The next day, Monday we did a long 9 mile walk up Bow Fell in the hot sunshine. The views were spectacular but the homeward downhill seemed to go on for ever. You could

see the sea from the top. Tuesday morning we visited Arts and Craft House in Bowness while Betrix Potter was on the agenda for others. We walked round Rydalwater with Ruth and Paul on Tuesday afternoon and almost made them late for the supper they were hosting for everyone at their hotel. Very kind of them and a good time was had by all. Wednesday we all did our own thing and Leigh and I went up Helvellyn which was fabulous apart from getting lost on the permissive path through the wood at the end. We could see the stunning views all the way round and several lakes at one time. It was very windy that day but it added to the atmosphere.

We had several nice meals with everybody at Dale End Farm - pasta cooked by Judy, fish cooked by Varda and a barbecue which was a general muck in by everyone. We ate out at the Jumble Cafe with Leslie and Varda on thursday night which was pleasant and querky. We had tried to get in to the vegetarian hotel but they said they were full up which surprised us as we were only table booked

in last year! We left on friday moring after Judy cooked everyone a mammoth breakfast. We had stopped near Leek on the way up to see Jane and Tim some Morgan friends of Leigh's. the journey back seemed to take much longer.

It has to be added that Dori had a very nice time on her holiday thanks to the patience of various people including in particular Brian and Alan who played football with her. She did the nine mile walk up Bow Fell and is amazingly agile. However I think her paws suffer on the rocks as she is really a Suffolk meadow softie. Unfortunately while we were away Jaffa the ginger kitten was run over and killed.

sorry
It looks as if you had a great time. You know I'm no cat-lover, but so sorry about Jaffa - you didn't tell me.
