After traveling for a week, it is time to get some clean clothes and yes the hotel has washers/dryers for guest use. $4.00 for the washer and $4.00 for the dryer and $2.00 for the soap. I don’t think prices are that high in America. But there are dryer racks which you can bring to your room. Washing done it is off to the tourist bureau to ask about WIFI. Australia is not known for free WIFI and it goes down frequently!! There was a neat little restaurant where we stopped for a late lunch and back to the hotel where we decided we better splurge and pay for the internet. Ken finished another book (Mary Ann tell bob one of his Michael Connelly books got left in the hotel book library in Cairns).

And on the map we noticed a RSL club (Legion). Thought we should check that out. Beautiful location, right on the Esplanade. And our first vision of the muddy flats of the Cairns waterfront. It is otherwise so lush and so much like Hawaii with the foliage - the Birds of Paradise and the Bougainvillea and the Palm trees. We were very excited – free WIFI. So we sat to do some catch-up on emails etc. It worked for awhile – the Ipad gaveout first!! Didn’t realize the Pokies were so popular (the casinos and machines.) Even here at this club the machines were very busy. There wasn’t a seat in the lounge, but lots of space in the dining area which had a lovely cool breeze. Suppertime was 6 PM at which time everyone lines up to put in their order and then there is the call for everyone to stand at attention and listen to (like a pledge of Allegiance) and a minute silence for someone who had died. I had the roast lamb (delicious) with mint jelly and mashed potatoes and gravy and vegetables – pumpkin, carrots, peas, cauliflower, broccoli. Ken had the roast beef which came with all those veggies too!! We were stuffed! Good thing we had the long walk back to the hotel. Saw the red fox bats flying around. They are much larger that our bats and have red fur under their chins!!
