The good news is my case finally arrived, so I do not have to wear my jeans for four weeks!

Sandakan is a captivating town with its very own charm, people and delicious foodstuffs. They cannot do enough to help. Travelling alone in this respect can be advantageous, osmosing (is that a word) all the help and advice given.

Formerly the capital of Sabah, it embraces so much culture with a predominant Chinese influence.

It is truly a bustling town with merchandise spilling out into the streets, interrupted by restaurants and hawkers stalls galore.

My morning started with breakfast at Sandakan central market, known as tamu (on sundays) in Sandakan - where locals crowd to savour Malay or Chinese food. Plenty of bargain clothes, trinkets, exotic foods and most of all the largest and most amazing variety of seafood, both fresh and dried in Sabah. It was in here I was drawn to my first stop- second floor - the original since 1940", the Kueh Teow with deep fried pork and chilli sauce. I did ask for water to quench my thirst. What I actually got was hot water with lemon and sugar. All quite delicious though. Still needing a drink I head back down for my revival 100 plus. An absolute must in these climates.

In the evening, Sandakan offers a variety of night markets and food stalls. Local restaurants are open until late, but the locals tend to eat early, so I followed the trend.

Heading off to Sapporo snacks house, I arrive to find convivial and unpretentious company.

A full house. The entire place was filled with Chinese and Malays and barely a word of English spoken. Time for some welsh charm! Or not!

I ordered Pandan chicken and the Kum Hong crab. I was not disappointed. Some of the tastiest chicken I have ever eaten and the crab was a triumph. Rick stein would have been in his element.
