the fires
On the day of leaving we had a few anxious moment. We were leaving Spain towards France. We were told by the reception of the Vichy Spa resort, that the roads North were closed because massive fires at the border. It di look terrifying on TV. One of the workers there had come through anyway. So we thought we tried too. Because the alternative would be to go through Andorra, which is a long way around. The whole sky was filled with smoke clouds and the burning fumes were strong. As we came closer, we could see the fires in the distance, traffic was crawling on the highway as well as on the tolway. At one time we c ould see the trucks at a standstill on the Tolway above us. We found out later that the roads were closed again soon after we came through. How lucky was that for us. Our Hotel was in Nimes and that was a shocker. It was the worst place we slept in on this trip. We were glad to get out. Even the breakfast was a disaster. Fruit that was of beside other things that were wrong. They did not charge for the breakfast.

trucks waiting to get through
We left at 9 o'clock and choose the country roads. Our car was filthy from ashes of the fires so we gave this a wash at a service station. We travelled through beautiful areas but it took to much time to do this all the way to Ponterlier. The many round abouts, trucks ,tractors that were pulling trailers with straw, that were blowing all over the road took to much time. By 1.30 we decided to take the Tolway, that brought in a couple of hours to Montperlier. A very nice area high in the mountains, definitly be cooler tonight. Last day in France tomorrow we will be in Germany. Till than Liz & Allan
