Saturday evening we were treated to quite a feast at the Welcome Dinner held at Sinstorf School. When we arrived at 6, the BBQ was already filling the air with the smells of summer. The Welcome Dinner also provided the first time we were able to meet with the group since we arrived.

We started the evening with a quick check in meeting as an American group. We were able to share some of the things that we had done since arriving. Number one on just about everyone’s list was copious amounts of sleep! Some had ventured into the city, to local parks, the Hamburg Zoo and of course the mall. It really seems like everyone is doing well and adjusting nicely to the different style of life! Everyone also enjoyed sharing the things that they had noticed were different here than at home. Breakfast, light switches and driving on the sidewalk were all points of discussion. One thing that is already being favorably noticed is the relative ease of transportation here in Hamburg. Students have been remarking on their ability to go where they want without having to wait for a ride from mom and dad.

to the BBQ we ventured and we were treated to a visit from a very special guest. McKain Webb-Lakey dropped by to say hi! McKain is an Edison Elementary and B-EHS alumni who is currently attending the Berklee School of Music in Boston. She was a member of the Edison- Hamburg exchange in 2008. She was in Hamburg visiting her exchange partner while wrapping up a month long tour of North Africa and Europe that had stops in Morocco, Tangiers, Spain and Germany. She leaves for home tomorrow, so our Welcome Dinner became her Farewell Dinner. It was a pleasure to see that the friends made on an exchange several years ago are still lasting! Even the German teachers were thrilled to see her!

After finishing a very delicious meal, the kids were off to the playground and the adults left to chat. Soon our German hosts appeared with welcome bags filled with all sorts of treats for their American guests. The students were full of smiles and excitement as they perused their new treasures. No vuvuzelas this time around thank goodness!

All too quickly, it was time to head home. Monday is one of the highlight trips of this exchange, Heidepark! The first week in general will be a very busy one with a trip to Bergedorf on Wednesday and the big trip to Lubeck and the night in the youth hostel on Thursday and Friday with a visit to Travemunde (the Baltic Sea) Friday!

I will keep the blog going for all of it, so keep checking back! I will post a preview of Heidepark this evening.
