This morning I went to Maison Bethany, an orphanage. Judging by the pictures on the walls, it seems to be Catholic. There were about 20 children. Our leader read a bible parable about building a house on a firm foundation. Then we built a small house using blocks on sand and one on a rock and made it rain with a pitcher of water. We had several activities. Watercoloring, singing, games and puzzles. They seemed to receive good care. The place was spacious by standards down here and clean.
I had the chance to speak with the translator. He 25 and single. He says that most men do not marry until they are 28 and women 25. He knows French, English, and at least one of the African languages.
I don't know what the temp is here but it is very hot and humid. It takes effort to sit in the shade. I drank a quart of crystal light when I got back. The ship is cool in most sections. There was one day that it rained. The roads I have been on so far are dusty and full of wholes. Some roads are brick. All along the roads are people selling all kinds of things from furniture to food. The homes/houses are set up in a couryard fashion so what faces the street are walls with doors
I got my one allowed load of laundry done last night. There is a ship shop on board. In addition to soap, batteries, T-shirts, candy, and smacks, it sells items for cooking like cake mixes, oatmeal, etc. There is a small Crew Kitchen somewhere. I saw it on the tour. It has all the pans, stoves, etc.
Yesterday was the Togo Independence Day. Their Flag has five stripes, three green and two yellow. In the corner is a red square with a large white star. There are people from about forty different countries serving on the ship. Though they all speak English, one can here a variety of languages during social times.

your blogs are getting better...I'm so glad you are writing. I love travel blogs, unfortunately every time I read one of yours I end up scrolling thru a bunch and lose an hour or two!! Makes me want to take off for parts unknown. Jim's mother and brother are coming this week. We are leaving for Alaska on the 17th, seeing Sam for a day before we leave so I'm getting excited abouthat too.
