Piazza del Duomo
Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. As if Firenze had sensed it somehow, the night was relatively quiet and allowed us a good night's rest and a late wake up for breakfast. After nearly two weeks of many miles travelled and sensory overload through many sights, sounds and tastes we needed it.
Like Roma, being in an apartment right in the centre of the city has its benefits but it is very noisy. There are revellers out until very early in the morning - and then the garbage trucks roll through! Maybe we were just too tired to notice last night.
And it was fitting that we decided today that our theme song for the trip would be The Lazy Song, by Bruno Mars. We keep hearing it on Radio KissKiss (along with Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know, and some other catchy Italian tune) over and over again...
Damian tried to visit the Uffizi gallery today but gave up as soon as he saw the queue. Same with a visit and a climb up the Duomo - you need to book to see anything in this country, even when it is not high season. He was hoping that it wouldn't be so
2009 Poggio Reale
Euro 10 from the Enoteca next door to our apartment. It came highly recommended and did not disappoint! busy given it was Good Friday, but the Italians really don't seem to care. If they played AFL here, there would surely be games scheduled - everything is open and as busy as can be.
Sue had no interest in more statues, paintings, churches and historic monuments. The only history she was interested in was how long Zara had been in Florence. So shopping was the theme of the day.
To be fair, everyone did a bit of shopping. How can you not with so much leather, clothing, shoes, gold and anything else you can think of. Emily got a beautiful set of earrings and Nick scored a pair of sunglasses. He looks just like Erik Estrada from CHiPS.
The weather up North is starting to look a little cool, so Sue managed to get some more practical clothes for the boys too. You could go crazy here buying stuff but it's not going to happen becuase we need to save our cash for parking, Autostrada tolls and probably all sorts of traffic fines we don't know about yet.
Being Good Friday, dinner was fish and chips. Not too bad considering what we had to work
Gelatoria Dei Neri
Definitely the favorite gelati. The Caramello has become the flavour most asked for. with. The wine was a fine Chianti. Just finishing the last of it as we write this blog entry. Of course the ragazzi (and Sue) visited the Gelateria dei Neri afterwards for their obligatory gelato.
After dinner, we strolled through the streets of Firenze, visited various piazzas and did some more window shopping. There's probably one or two more purchases to make before we leave...
Tomorrow we leave Firenze and head to Venezia for Easter. Hopefully we will be able to celebrate Easter at the Basilica di San Marco. We shall see - first we have to work out where to park, then we'll have to find our Hotel. More adventures ahead, no doubt.
