Hi everyone,
Ok, so today's entry is about another party but honestly I am working hard!
As a treat for the girls and the boys, we as a group of volunteers, organised a masquerade ball for them for the weekend just passed. Let me tell you more...
The week started with us making plans and scouting out the things that we needed to decorate the room at the boys orphanage and for the kids to make their masks. The prices here are incredibly different to back home, for example we managed to get two full size balloon arches for S/.17 each which is just over £4 each, now that is Primark Price! The room looked lovely, with balloons and ribbons everywhere, somehow we ended up with St. Paul's colours as the theme of the decorations, not on purpose but maybe subconsciously.
As for the masks, well they were the best bits. We bought plastic ones for the boys which they proceeded to decorate with paints, making them more zorro than they had been before. For the girls we used foam templates and then we worked with them to decorate them with glitter and ribbons and all the
pretty things in life. It was brilliant fun. The ladies that work at the orphanage worked really hard for us all and spent hours cleaning and dying carrier bags full of chicken feathers so that we could also use them to decorate our masks. The feathers really made it. Of course, I think I had even more fun than the girls decorating my mask!
The budget also stretched to material to make capes for the boys, which the older girls worked on and to buying sparkly scarves for the girls, which they really loved and have worn most days since! The boys embraced the capes and used them while they danced to add a sense of mystery and excitement, it was a very special evening.
Now, as the children are always dancing for us, we decided to choreograph and put on a dance for them. Honestly, it was very embarrassing but a real giggle. I would love to say that my years of belly dancing, salsa and street dancing lessons came in useful but really it seems that I have learned nothing! A couple of us worked out a very simple routine, although it did have quite a
Boogie Time
Yes I know these are blurry, it's becasue we were just moving so quickly! few spins in it, to the perfectly worded 'We are Family' by Sister Sledge and then we taught the rest of the group. It didn't take us long but it would have been even quicker if we hadn't been in fits of giggles the whole time! Maybe if you are lucky I will teach you the routine when I come home, perhaps it could be in Vianney's next assembly, hmmm...
Well, in spite of a few stage nerves, the dance went well and the children clapped very loudly, whether that was praise or just good manners, I will leave to you to decide but I know which I think!
Any party would be incomplete without food so we also put on a bit of a spread for them. We had an enormous pot of fruit salad, some guacamole, tuna salad and lots of crackers and of course sweets. The most surprising thing for you will be that I helped to preapre this feast! I made the guacamole, yep I realise that some of you know that this is easy, but for me it was a success as I had never done so before. In the fruit salad we
had oranges, grapes, papayas, mangos and melon. It should have had some condensed milk on it as that is how the children usually have their fruit salad however I forgot that I had it in my bag and only found it when I got home so it was an even healthier option than it would have been if all had gone to plan!
Everything about the ball was great fun and everyone enjoyed it, even if I was very tired from all the dancing again! We have another couple of birthdays to celebrate tomorrow so more dancing and more festivities, this country likes to enjoy itself!
Unfortunately today I will end on a sadder note. The girl that I talked to you about before who is working hard to become a doctor is quite poorly at the moment. She has had abdominal pains for a few days and is currently in hospital. They are not sure what is wrong with her and we will have more news later today. I am sure she will be fine, it is just a worrying time for the girls and for us. At first the doctors diagnosed appendicitis, then kidney stones, now they are unsure. The problem seems to be that they do not have the equipment that we are used to, equipment that would diagnose more quickly and accurately. It is as these times that I realise just how far from home I am.
I will give you news as soon as I have some, take care as always,
Tasha
