...me again.

Today was the first time I really felt homesick as I contemplated a Sunday without roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings. Sundays are quite different here, for a start the orphanage doesn't have an oven so a roast is not very likely!

The feel of Sunday is much the same though, we spent the day watching films and lazing around. The girls love to watch films and even though they were offered a day out at the park they preferred to stay home in front of the television, it seems that teenagers are the same wherever you are in the world! We watched Garfield and the Smurfs Movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed and the girls were kind enough to put the english subtitles on so that I could understand what was going on!

There are 4 of us volunteers left here at the moment and as a 'treat' we decided to cook for the girls last night. One of the volunteers loves to cook Indian food so that is what we did. Those of you who know me well know that my culinary skills are pretty non-existent, this was picked up by the team quite quickly and after failing to manage to brown onions I was put on cleaning duty! Where I was much happier. Even without me touching most of the cooking we managed to destroy the rice, cooking it until it looked like rice pudding. However, the meal was very nice in the end and the girls wanted second helpings of the rice, wanting to know what special type of rice it was as they hadn't had it before. Looks like we got away with that one!

After a battle with the girls who wanted to wash up their own dishes as they usually do, I got down to the washing up which in itself was a task and a half. With no Fairy liquid and no hot water, it took a while but it was worth the effort. The girls were very appreciative and celebrated their night off with another movie!

I realise that so far in my blogs I have mainly shown you the pretty areas of the town, today I wanted to show you a bit more of where I am living. The area itself is in a state of renovation and whenever you walk down the street you see people rebuilding walls or trying to bring some beauty into their surroundings. On one side of the street you can see the big park that the girls sometimes visit (when they're not watching films) and then you turn around to see a rundown building which is falling apart. In spite of the work here that is still to be done and the sad state of some of the streets the people are still really warm and friendly. They also celebrate their Inca roots with bright and colourful wall murals which cheer up the neighbourhood and are sunny even through the rain.

Well, I think you are now up to date so I shall say goodbye and will catch up with you again soon,

take care,

Tasha
