The Spanish-Dog theory proves false, but a new theory emerges....nipping dogs=high mileage

Day 36 Ash Grove, MO to Houston, MO

We (I) decided we really wanted to make some serious miles today to make up for yesterday and so we could make the Ozark climbing shorter by breaking it up over 2 days so we made our big goal Houston, MO. Yes it was 114miles away and it’d be a huge day with some climbing but we went for it. Long story short it worked out and we made it just before the sun went down.

Highlights of the day included more dog attacks against which even Spanish could not help us, meeting a lot of cyclists, and incredible heat and humidity. We ended up meeting a 15-member group of cyclists that were being “guided” on their way across the country on a 3-month trip. It was really cool to see how different they all were. Their abilities and backgrounds were all over the place. They ride together somewhat and they swap out responsibilities like cooking and shopping. We also met a lone cyclist named Liam and he gave us some contact info for some Warm Showers.org people in Ellington who might be able to put us up for the night tomorrow.

The Missouri hills are starting to get longer and steeper but nothing out of control yet. I don’t really have much to say today other than it was a long day and we did it and now we are very tired. The “real” climbing is supposed to start tomorrow, I guess we’ll see if all the horror stories of the hills will come true.
