Second day of our stay in Torquay, we explored Kent's cavern - the oldest homosapien cave in England. Sophie was too scared and bolted just after the tour started. She stayed outside while the rest of us enjoyed a pretty cool hour long tour that showed the inside of a cave with the oldest proof of human existence in England. You can't tell from the photo here but Cate and Jon are in front of pretty amazing stalagmites and stalactites - some as old as 64,000 years ago.
We also did a drive through Cockington (Jon liked to say the name over and over again). It's a pretty park with an english cottage and park as well as area for local artists to sell their wares. We have never seen such narrow streets. Roads right up to the hedges! Robb and a lady in a red car came head to head and it was a "who is going to move backwards first" competition. Neither refused to move and we ultimately held our breaths while the two cars came millimetres away from each other. Everyone, except Robb, was freaked out!! Robb, weirdo that he is, was thrilled by the experience.
Long and NARROW ROAD
Driving through Cockington in Torquay We finished our day with a drive through Paignton which is next to Tourquay and has an amazing hilltop view, and shell hunting while the tides were low on Torquay's main beach.
We drove 4.5 hours from Torquay and are now in Brighton, which, we learned upon arrival, is the Gay capital of England. It's been an educational trip for the kids on many levels!
Speaking of educational... if you need an extra bed, don't say "cot" because this apparently means crib in England. We fortunately got things sorted out otherwise Sophie would have had flashbacks to her infant days.
Before dinner tonight, we took a stroll on Brighton Pier. Cate thinks it was cheesy but quaint. It did feel kind of carnival-ish but loved the view of the English Channel nonetheless.
Tomorrow, we are headed to Dover/Canterbury - Kent Region, where we will be hunting for Papa's house that he grew up in.
