Laura’s week in New Zealand – Part 1 (Queenstown)
Tory’s friend Laura came over from Sydney to experience a bit of the camper van life for a week. We were originally planning to spend most of the week skiing, however the weather was fine, clear and sunny with no snow in sight - so we switched to Plan B, a whistle stop tour of the highlights of the South Island – woo!
Day 1: We walked to Bob’s Cove where a bit of the Lord of the Rings was filmed (we had to use our imagination but we could just about picture Sam, Frodo and Golom in the bushes before the Gondor men in hoods turned up). In the afternoon we took a cable car up the mountain which was very cool as we went up through the clouds an overcast day turned into a sunshiny one! There are 2 luge tracks on the mountain which was a lot of fun, Will and Laura nearly killed themselves playing chicken going into a tunnel. We finished the day off with a hot chocolate and as if the day couldn’t get any better – mini golf!!!!!!!!!!!!! (the over excited exclamations are
Will)
Day 2: We started the next day with a tranquil trip to Arrow Town, an old gold mining area. We walked around the town and down to the river - which was another Lord of the Rings sight (we are having to resist writing LOTR as we think our street credibility wouldn’t take it). Afterwards, we took it up a notch by doing a bit of brisk jet boating on the Shotover river, it was freezing cold but luckily the boat had heated hand rails.
If that wasn’t enough of an adrenalin rush we (minus Tory who claimed vertigo) decided to end the day with the Shotover Canyon Swing, a 60m free fall followed by a 200m swing out over the canyon. Scary stuff and not helped by the two guys who strap you in and then hang you over the drop!! Arrrggghhhhh. The survival celebrations were held in The Ballarat Trading Company where we treated ourselves to a glass of Champagne and a scrumptious dinner.
