New York We stayed in a lovely flat in Brooklyn (arranged via airb&b.com), a stones throw from the subway and local restaurants. With only 9 days and plenty to see off we set! Day 1: Massive breakfast in Brooklyn (maple syrup bacon & steak - meat feast!) and then out to Time Square to meet Tory’s friend Mark for a drink. On the way to the pub we passed a theatre in which Daniel Radcliff was performing and looked with pity at the line of people waiting for his autograph...an hour later we joined the line! Tory found her way to the front and competed successfully for Radcliff’s signature, alongside a 10 year old girl and a middle aged man with a tea tray and silver pen (No ordinary tea tray at that - It had ... read more

Panama – a nice unexpected stopover After not finding our perfect island setting on the Caribbean coast of Colombia we planned 10 days on an island off the Pacific coast of Panama. Before heading towards the island we spent two nights outside of Panama City at Monkey Lodge – yes, there were real monkeys there! We had a days adventure on the Gatun river passing the container ships on the Panama Canal in our tiny little boat. We also fed the monkeys on Monkey Island, walked to an old WWII American radio station, had lunch on our own private island and had an awkward moment hanging around an Embera Indian tribe. Contadora Island Contadora is part of the Pearl Islands, it has 6 beaches and 4 restaurants and not a lot else... perfect! To Will’s delight ... read more

Cartagena Our final stop in Colombia was Cartagena, an old colonial walled city. The bus trip over from Santa Marta was uneventful although the fact that they take a video recording of each passenger before you set out on the buses is still a little unnerving! We splashed out and stayed in a lovely small hotel (Casa Sweety) which had air conditioning and it’s own mini pool – oh the luxury! We took a tour of the old fort (Tory got very burnt that day – Will tried to tell her that’s what happens when you have fair skin) and made it up to Café del Mar on the wall for sunset one night which was great. We also treated ourselves to a meal at the Hard Rock Café including a bowl of ice cream which ... read more

Santa Marta, Tayrona and Minca From Bogota we took a plane ride up to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, to the city of Santa Marta. As soon as we stepped off the plane we knew something had changed, the weather was hot and sticky, and the atmosphere was laid back (not surprisingly given the heat!). We spent about a week and a half in Santa Marta interspersed with a few nights in both Tayrona National Park (a spot of largely unspoiled jungle next to the sea) and Minca (a small village in the foothills), the highlights of our time in these places is outlined below. Santa Marta: a very relaxing stay in Aluna with our Irish host Patrick; set Mexican lunch at Agave Azul and fresh smoothies at Lulu’s; beach day at Rododero in a ... read more

Bogota and Solento - Colombia We flew into Bogota from Buenos Aires, one big city exchanged for another huge one! We only spent two nights there visiting the Ore museum and taking the cable car up to the top of Mt Monserat for a view across the city. We took an eight hour bus (plus a collectivo and a jeep!) to Solento, in La Zona Caffeteria – very hot and very hard to hang onto your seat when going over the mountains (think the interactive cinema at Granada Studios Tour (RIP)). We stayed on a farm (La Serrena) in some lovely countryside and met some really nice people there. Our highlights of our stay were: the hike through the Valle De Cocora (huge wax palms and elusive humming birds); eating Danny and Meagan’s tomatoes and potatoes; ... read more

Ashram (Eco Yoga Park) This eco ashram was located about an hour away from Buenos Aires and was run by Hare Krishnas. It served only vegetarian/vegan food (mostly from its own organic garden) and did not allow meat, alcohol or caffeine. We arrived in the middle of the ashram’s 10 year anniversary and the place was packed with Hare Krishna’s, and quite frankly we wondered just what the hell we had got ourselves into! We got our own mud hut (for the most part) which was very cold at night and much to Tory’s delight had a drop toilet rather one that flushed – the smell came through the floorboards into our room! Our daily itinerary was: 8am breakfast (preceded by a dawn meditation and chanting session if we so wished!), 12.30pm meditation and music therapy ... read more

Buenos Aires We visited BA three times in total so for ease of reading we have amalgamated our time into one blog entry. We really enjoyed BA, not least because our hostel (Chillhouse) was great; it was also in easy reach of a Starbucks! The highlights of our trips were as follows: • La Bomba del Tiempo: a group of drummers go crazy in an old warehouse while the crowd goes nuts. Great atmosphere (plus a fog of cannabis smoke!) although, we only lasted about 45mins before retreating to the bar to watch from a respectable middle aged distance! • Jonathan’s tour: an English expat does daily tours around the city. On our day we were the only two so we got our own personal tour – great way to see and learn about the city ... read more

Puerto Madryn After 20 hours and two buses we made it up to the coastal town of Puerto Madryn. The first 4 hours of the journey saw snow covered landscapes, the next 16 hours the landscape did not change from deserted flat plains. We saw our first Southern Right Whale the same day we arrived and they just kept coming! You could see them from the beach and walk along the pier where a mother and her calf swam beneath us at one point. We spent many hours on whale patrol on the pier! We also woke up for high tide and headed to a beach 20km away where the whales venture as close as 15m to the sand. It is an amazing feeling running along side a whale - a little bit hard due to ... read more

El Calafate and Perito Moreno Glacier We decided on flying to El Calafate in Patagonia since the bus journey is over 30 hours one way, a flight was only 3. El Calafate has a ski resort feel to it - minus the snow - lots of chalet type houses, cafes and chocolate shops. Our hostel over looked the town, lake and beautiful snow capped peaks in the background. More importantly it had under floor heating! We spent a day wandering around the town and visiting the natural bird reserve in search of a flamingo. Unfortunately it was not to be and instead of seeing one we introduced two dogs to the sanctuary (after they followed us from the hostel all the way there), so there may be little of any other bird life left! The main ... read more

Iguazu After an epic 26 hour bus trip from Salta we arrived in a very wet Puerto Iguazu. We stayed in a French lady’s hotel (Los Trangueros) which was excellent, as was the home cooked food she made for us and to top it all off they had a lovely dog called Tango. Iguazu falls were truly spectacular. They are surrounded by rainforest so a trip there also has the benefit of some animal encounters for good measure. The pictures of Iguazu should speak for themselves so without further ado here they are…… ... read more
