Last Day in Bangkok, travel to Siem Reap

Last night was our last in Bangkok for just over two weeks, and the last party night for a little while. Having now firmly asserted ourselves as locals in the Roof bar, where staff and fellow drinkers alike recognise us and come over to say hi, we headed back for a few beers to say goodbye for now.

We inadvertently got ourselves involved in a drinking contest with some German girls, who were on their last night of travelling after 6 months. I think we won, but my memory of the last few rounds is a little hazy!

A handy tip for future reference – don’t go all out on a big night out when you have to pack the next morning. We weren’t exactly what the traditional traveller would call ‘well prepared’ for our trip to the edge of Cambodia’s jungle. I was wearing shorts and t-shirt, and RD was equipped with a broken iPhone and a copy of Top Gear magazine.

I think we’ll classify this afternoon as terrifying. After a quite frankly death-defying trip to the airport, in what appeared to be a homage to the Luc Besson film Taxi, we needed time to sit down and reflect how much we still liked living. And then we saw the ‘plane’ they intended flying us to Cambodia in. Call me conservative if you will, but I like my planes to have all mod-cons – including jet engines. Not a boot for the luggage, a couple of propellers, and capacity for less people than a Travel West Midlands single decker bus.

Still, here we are, relaxing on the hotel terrace after enjoying one of the best steaks I’ve had in some time. Well worth the US$7 we paid. We have booked a ride for 8am tomorrow morning to go and see the temples, so expect an update on that to follow.

Sounds like you guys are having fun, hope you made it to Cambodia in your sky taxi & you meet many more people from Moseley lol
