Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, what to say??

I have now spent 10 days here in the capital and absolutely love it, it is an incredible city. The weather has been great, the food and wine pretty amazing and the women are what can only be described as easy on the eye. As many people had told me it does have a real European feel to it, making it very easy to feel at home here straight away.

We arrived from Uruguay with a few days left on the tour to enjoy Buenos Aires. So this gave me the opportunity to do a city tour and get to see the major sights and learn my bearings in the city. Then that evening we went off to a tango lesson and show, which whilst quite touristy was actually really enjoyable despite being dragged onto the stage area where everyone discovered my complete lack of rhythm! Then after that we made our first trip into Palermo and specifically Plaza Serrano which was a square we ended up spending many evenings. A collection of bars and clubs that all stayed open late and always seemed to provide an entertaining evening with some sort of story...

The strange experience of wandering into people's houses in Boca

The next few days involved a continuous string of leaving parties as members of the tour began to depart for home, and I began to realise that this was still very much the beginning for me (a great feeling as I let everyone know how I really felt for them going back to work!!!)

So then it was time to find some new accommodation as the tour finished, luckily a few others were hanging around in BA for the week so we managed to find an apartment for 7 days at a ridiculously cheap rate. So here I was able to finally un-pack my bag and actually feel settled in the city. It was great to be able to just wander around the city, relax in the parks during the day and then head out in Palermo in the evenings. I have managed to actually go for some runs too (after some of the recent photos of me have exposed a rather large beer belly which certainly doesn't seem to be getting smaller).

During this week I also had the rather scary occasion of my birthday when I moved to the dreaded - one year away from 30.

Maradona, Eva Peron and some singer no one had heard of
I was treated to a full English breakfast (with some dodgy Argentinean bacon and sausages) and then a nice meal with the remaining travellers around and then a big evening out. The next day was a blur for most, and I have certainly felt better, only really venturing outside the when drinking water levels dropped perilously low in the flat.
At the end of this week we managed to get hold of some tickets for the U2 gig in Buenos Aires, which was absolutely incredible. I wouldn´t have described myself as a massive U2 fan but I did seem to recognise all the music and the atmosphere was amazing. A really great way to bring my Buenos Aires stay to an end.

The next day it was time to leave the apartment and I cracked and decided that I needed to upgrade my accommodation levels for a few days. I checked into the Hyatt where I was greeted by groups of screaming girls outside the entrance. It took me a while to figure out that they were actually there for U2 who it turned out were staying in the same hotel. Whilst at the hotel I also managed to

Home ownership rules are slightly different in Argentina
find a hairdresser as my buffon was beginning to get to ridiculous lengths. It soon became apparent though that the hairdresser spoke absolutely no English. 5 minutes of farce then followed as I tried my best to mime how I would like my hair cut, he nodded politely, obviously not understanding at all. Luckily i don´t think there is any permenant damage but you may see a lot more photos with me wearing a hat from now on.

So after two days of luxury (and a very stylish new hair do) I feel fully refreshed and now ready to begin my venture to the slightly colder parts of this continent. Look forward to letting you know how different it is down south.

All the best Charlie

(except those like marc who obviously couldnt do that with the kids and all....). all in all it is a great time as an arsenal supporter to be the other side of the world. xx
