Another relaxed beginning to the day, add the fact we are not moving on certainly creates the, “permanently on holiday feel” We chose a trip to visit the Lady Nelson Information centre, this is well set up, with a trip back through time that explained the geology formations in the area.
Also inside this centre was a holographic display with explanations’ given by one of the early settlers that wrote and interacted with the indigenous people from around the area.
A well put together presentation and insights into the early settlers as well as the impact the Europeans had on the locals that had inhabited the area for a few thousand years.
From this Info site we found the Englebrecht caves.
A guided tour that took us under the City to caves that have water within and have been dived and tracked by cave divers. Also the history about how the hole had been used as a dump site for a lot of land clearing as well as the local rubbish pit. It was not until the local butcher began dumping offal and bones down the hole, the local council began to realize this was causing a problem for the towns water.
The cave system was eventually cleared of the rubbish and developed as a tourist attraction.
The caves have been mapped and travel under at least two blocks of the town.
We went from this site to find the sunken rose garden in the middle of the town, behind the historic town hall building.
A beautiful garden setting with steps down into another sink hole of a cave system.
The geology and history of this town with the limestone caves is fascinating.
We left town and drove to another lookout above the town that linked another lake called, Valley Lake, part of the lake system associated with the Blue lake.
We travelled home and relaxed after our day of Sightseeing around Mt Gambier.
